Turley Pesenti Vineyard Paso Robles Zinfandel 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Advocate Review
Rated 94
From the estate, the 2013 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard (15.9%) comes from vines planted in the 1920s on primarily limestone soil. This wine smells like an exploding black cherry fruit bomb. Gorgeous notes of kirsch liqueur and raspberries, an almost laser-like minerality and crispness are present in this full-bodied, beautiful wine, which seems remarkably light on its feet for its power and richness. Blind-tasted, this wine could easily pass for an old vine Grenache from a Mediterranean climate - it's that Grenache-like. This full-bodied, stunningly pure beauty is another great success for Turley in 2013. Drink it over the next decade.

Wine Tasting Notes
This certified organic estate-owned vineyard was planted in the 1920s on primarily limestone soil. Though the vines are also head-trained & dry-farmed, the soil plays the most important role in distinguishing this vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. The wines have a lightness and aromas unique to the site, with crushed-mineral and floral characteristics not normally seen in Zinfandel.

92 points. Deep woody tones make up the majority of the aroma. Blackberry, black tea, and a touch of pepper also seem to show through pretty strongly, with blueberry and plum jam, rose bush, and caraway emerging with a spin in the glass. Nicely rich and full bodied, this wine is instantly shows fresh blackberry and spiced, raspberry sauce flavors. There is a toast and tar component combined with a hint of leather moving into the mid palate. The tannins are firm and gripping, but have a certain waxy quality about them that is reminiscent of eating a dark chocolate bar. Rose wood and sap appear on the finish and seem to never cease. This wine is beautifully bright, while still maintaining a substantial amount of depth. I could see it evolving significantly over the next three to five years. Complex nose of pepper, flowers and red fruits. Mouthwatering fresh fruit flavors of raspberry, mineral and spice with firm tannins. Good balance. Really nice wine which they said is peaking presently. From 80 yr old vines. 92 pts. 9/1/12 at winery

Bigger than the '01, '02, and '03 Pesenti vineyard zins, the 2004 explodes out of the glass with powerful yet intoxicating fruit on the nose. The attack is a mouth-coater, and the mid-palate is every bit as broad and luxurious as the 2002- though composed of "thicker walls". The finish is extremely long and evolves with rich, smokey black fruits reflective of the nose, which is where you wind up going right back to before the finish even goes away. Thoroughly an impressive wine, especially since I see it for prices under $70 in some places on the web. If you want to experience a top-notch zinfandel from California, I can't recommend the 2004 enough. It may not be as "seductive" or subtle as its 2002, older sibling- but it's every bit as powerful and perhaps even more memorable. 95 points, if such things matter to you.

Chewy with lots of blackberry fruit on the nose that exhibits itself on palette. Alcohol is not overly evident.

That rare Zin that shows both richness and a sleek sense of elegance. Briary and floral black raspberry aromas lead to delicately complex flavors of smoky cherry, wild anise and white peppercorn. Drink now through 2020.

From Paso Robles' limestone soils, the 2004 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard could pass for a Grenache-based southern Rhone with its striking minerality, pepper and kirsch liqueur-like notes. Full-bodied, but remarkably fresh (thanks to the limestone)... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 2004 Turley Cellars Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard 750ml

From Turley's new vineyard in Paso Robles, the 2003 Pesenti Vineyard (600 cases, 16% alcohol) comes across as one of the most Rhone Valley-like wines in the portfolio. Earthy, mineral, peppery, herbaceous notes intermixed with strawberry, cherry... Robert Parker. A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 2003 Turley Cellars Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard 750ml

Turley 01 Pesenti Zinfandel 92 Points - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate: I believe the 2001 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is the first vintage where Larry Turley and winemaker Ehren Jordan controlled everything from viticulture to winemaking. Made from extremely old vines, it is a deep ruby-colored Zinfandel boasting a big, briery, sweet bouquet, considerable glycerin and flesh (15.5% alcohol), and a southern Rhone-like pepper, garrigue, and spice component. Fleshy, full-bodied, and hedonistic.

A bit muddled at first, with earthy wild berry and raspberry flavors that are dry and tannic, with hints of bay leaf and fresh earth. Shows more complexity on the finish, where the tannins flex their muscles. Drink now through 2008. 700 cases made. (... Wine Spectator.
