Turley Paso Robles Zinfandel 2011

Member Review by Philip James:

Hot, acidic (in a good way) and surprisingly crisp for a Zin. Tight, but still young. Did have some nice notes of baked cherries and was rather mineral. Overall i really liked it, but its not your typical Cali zin. Great food pairing wine. Served with sea bass, but also paired well with fried chicken!

The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. 100 year old vines make for a magnificent Napa Valley Zinfandel.

Light red fruit on the nose with a hint of nail polish. Bright fruit up front with a hint of raisin finish. Mostly well balanced with a slightly acidic mouthfeel. Could probably use some aging

93 points The nose on this wine is deep and spicy, with an intense herbal tone. It’s very pastoral and full of tobacco and cherry notes. Black stone, chocolate, and gun smoke open up on the spin. Beginning with dried fruit and peppered, grilled meat, this wine quickly moves into a dense and spicy combination of dark fruit and firm minerals. This is clearly a wine that would benefit from at least 8 to 10 years of bottle aging. It’s extremely intense, tight and earthy, and it shows spectacular acidity and structure. Its palate is explosive and the finish seems to never end. This is clearly a masterpiece, and its only going to get better over the years Source: What's Worth Drinking: http://whatsworthdrinking.com/2010/09/17/post-69-central-coast-adventures-pt-8-turley-winery/

It has a subtle entry followed by a nice explosion of exotic fruit and silky smooth mouthfeel. The finish is peppery and spice driven. We LOVE this wine. It has the fruit forwardness and the graceful overall composition that drives us to drunkdom... the alcohol level is a little bit high. :) We definitely want to search out some more Turley's. !! It shows beautiful crushed rock, acacia flower, raspberry, blueberry, and blackberry characteristics, full body, supple tannin, and decent acidity. It won't make old bones, but for drinking during its first 4-5 years of life, it is impressively constituted as well as well-balanced.

Dark red. High-toned, fruit-driven aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. Dense, sappy and sweet, with a candied, liqueur-like character to its red berry and spice flavors. Offers an enticing sugar/acid balance and noteworthy concentration.

Reveals a dark plum/ruby color, oodles of sweet cherry, plum, licorice, pepper, and spicy characteristics, medium to full body, and a fleshy, generous, well-endowed personality.

Deep red. Deep, musky aromas of dark fruits, mocha, tobacco and cracked pepper, lifted by sweet spices; this reminded me of Howell Mountain fruit. Sweet, creamy and deep, with a peppery lift but a complete absence of hard edges. Not a fruity style but nuanced and interesting. Finishes quite long, with suave tannins.

The 2006 Zinfandel Old Vines, which is a blend of old-vine parcels that are too small to be sold as single-vineyards, has a deeper ruby color, with hints of roasted herbs, pepper, nori (seaweed wrapper) intermixed with black cherry, raspberry, plum, ... Dark red. Liqueur-like crushed blackberry and sappy cherry on the nose. Compellingly sweet and vibrant, with a chewy underlying mineral character giving shape to the superripe berry flavors. This has superb fruit. Finishes fat and very long, with creamy tannins and the structure to age.

Small cuvee is made from century old vines that bless the area and the vineyard. Yield of one ton per acre is self evident of the wines concentration and personality. In addition to varietal fruit we find earthy notes that delight senses. This classic Zinfandel pairs well with BBQ and Chili. Pizza, hamburgers, and hearty pasta dishes also work well.
