Turley 'Juvenile' Zinfandel 2016

Member Review by RandyFisher:

Black and blue fruit on the nose. PnP it was jammy with black fruit, some white pepper, baking spices and a long finish of very smooth tannins. The jamminess resolved with some air and became a tasty well balanced wine.

The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.  Read less

Ready to enjoy now, but worthy of a few years of age.

Racy and fairly ripe, with jammy raspberry and spiced cinnamon aromas leading to vivid flavors of dried cherry, licorice and rosemary. Drink now through 2020. 14,000 cases made.

A killer Zinfandel, the 2013 Zinfandel Juvenile is a blend from younger vines replanted on old-vine sites. For the statisticians, this wine is made from Zinfandel vines ranging from six to 25 years of age across 15 different vineyards, including such hallowed Zin terroir as Hayne, Ueberroth, Pesenti, Salvador, and Vineyard 101. This is a stunning example that shouldn’t be discounted just because it is not a single-vineyard wine. Deep ruby/purple, with oodles of black cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant fruit as well as some pepper and spice, the wine is plump, full-bodied, sexy and delicious. Sporting 15.5% natural alcohol, this is a lusty, extroverted Zinfandel that has been brilliantly put together by the Turley winemaking crew. Drink it over the next 4–5 years.

Sleek, ripe and youthful, offering jammy raspberry aromas and flavors, with zesty notes of smoky spice and grilled anise. Drink now through 2019.

Two wines are already in bottle, including the 2012 Zinfandel Juvenile, an assemblage of all the younger vine material that offers a lot of raspberry and blue fruits in a medium-bodied, silky style. Both of these cuvees are best drunk in their first 3–4 years of life.
