Troon Vineyard Vermentino Foundation Applegate Valley Or 1972

Winemaker's Notes:

2013 was a classic vintage for Southern Oregon. An early start to the cool season was followed by warm, dry & even conditions throughout the rest of the year. Flinty & crisp, with lemon/lime & white peach notes. A small amount of CO2 was intentionally left to give the nose lift & provide freshness. Excellent to pair with fresh oysters, steamed clams, & freshly caught trout.

Troon Vineyard is an internationally recognized, award winning, boutique winery, with a team dedicated to the pursuit of "good times and fine wines." Located in the viticultural heart of the Applegate Valley, the winery and vineyard are set on a beautiful 98 acre property with breathtaking panoramic views. Troon Vineyard is situated about half way between Grants Pass and Jacksonville (approximately 20 minutes from either location). Established in 1972 by founder and southern Oregon grape growing pioneer Dick Troon, the winery is now owned and operated by the Martin family. With an incredible new tasting room and winery completed in summer 2005, this is the preeminent facility in southern Oregon. Reminiscent of a French villa, this multi-building complex has some distinctly contemporary influences. Details like copper gutters, tile roofs, and extensive cedar work, serve to accentuate some of the traditional aspects. Inside you will find hand-scraped hickory floors, granite countertops, and a commercial kitchen, leaving no doubt that attention to detail is important to us. With unique experiences like providing accompanying hors d'oeuvres for tasting, brunches throughout the summer, winemaker's dinners, cooking classes and numerous other events throughout the year, this is a can't miss stop. Making only small lots (mostly under 300 cases) of: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay, among others, allows us to have new and interesting wines ready for you every time you visit us. Our winemaking philosophy has always been traditional and minimalist. We continue to strive to bring only the best fruit into the winery from small estate vineyards and to let the nature of the grapes express themselves. Our goal is to make the perfect wine, to make no compromises in our approach and our effort to achieve this. In the vineyard, we follow organic principles and aspire to a closed loop, sustainable farming environment. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and all tending of the vines is done by hand. The goal is the perfect fruit. We have recently planted 16 acres of new varietals which include: Primitivo, Petite Syrah, Rousanne, Marsanne, and Sangiovese. Other acreage planted includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc. Read less

Apple blossoms, pressed flowers and a touch of quince greet the nose. Bright yet well-rounded with polished edges in the mouth, this shows off the quince of the nose layered upon apple and vaguely herbal flavors on the palate. There's nice focus and a mineral snap to this on the back end, which leads to a juicy fig-tinged citrusy finish that ends with some pith and pebbles notes. This is pretty good stuff. 88 points
