Troon Vineyard Riesling Applegate Valley Dry 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Funky on the nose with all sorts of weird aromas that range from dried flowers to licorice. Chewing tobacco, dried blood orange and apple butter with a little old wool blanket thrown in for good measure. Light and bright on entry with a lovely rhubarb note early on that leads to a mid-palate full of subtle and elegant orchard fruit flavors. This is rather soft in a way. Though the acid is fairly electric on the mid-palate, there’s not a lot of weight here but plenty of flavor and refreshment. The finish is zippy and clean and really quite long and dynamic. This smells a bit but feels so honest and fresh in the mouth that I really like it. 88pts

Troon Vineyard is an internationally recognized, award winning, boutique winery, with a team dedicated to the pursuit of "good times and fine wines." Located in the viticultural heart of the Applegate Valley, the winery and vineyard are set on a beautiful 98 acre property with breathtaking panoramic views. Troon Vineyard is situated about half way between Grants Pass and Jacksonville (approximately 20 minutes from either location). Established in 1972 by founder and southern Oregon grape growing pioneer Dick Troon, the winery is now owned and operated by the Martin family. With an incredible new tasting room and winery completed in summer 2005, this is the preeminent facility in southern Oregon. Reminiscent of a French villa, this multi-building complex has some distinctly contemporary influences. Details like copper gutters, tile roofs, and extensive cedar work, serve to accentuate some of the traditional aspects. Inside you will find hand-scraped hickory floors, granite countertops, and a commercial kitchen, leaving no doubt that attention to detail is important to us. With unique experiences like providing accompanying hors d'oeuvres for tasting, brunches throughout the summer, winemaker's dinners, cooking classes and numerous other events throughout the year, this is a can't miss stop. Making only small lots (mostly under 300 cases) of: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay, among others, allows us to have new and interesting wines ready for you every time you visit us. Our winemaking philosophy has always been traditional and minimalist. We continue to strive to bring only the best fruit into the winery from small estate vineyards and to let the nature of the grapes express themselves. Our goal is to make the perfect wine, to make no compromises in our approach and our effort to achieve this. In the vineyard, we follow organic principles and aspire to a closed loop, sustainable farming environment. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and all tending of the vines is done by hand. The goal is the perfect fruit. We have recently planted 16 acres of new varietals which include: Primitivo, Petite Syrah, Rousanne, Marsanne, and Sangiovese. Other acreage planted includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
