Trimbach Pinot Gris Alsace Aoc Reserve 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

The Trimbach 2003 Pinot Gris Réserve was vinified to complete dryness, with very little residual sugar. The wine was fermented in stainless steel vats with no oak aging. Bottling was done in the spring of 2004 to preserve freshness and aging capability. This classical example of Pinot Gris is probably one of their best. Rich and fragrant, the wine is very ripe and harmonious in style, with juicy yellow peach and ripe pear on the nose. It is full-bodied with ripe, smoky, tropical fruit flavors and a long, slightly nutty finish. Served well chilled, this wine is excellent with sushi, salmon, scallops, veal, chicken, and pâtés. Delicious with spicy dishes, it also makes an excellent aperitif.

Established in 1626, the Trimbach family has a wine-making history stretching back almost 400 years. It was not until the late 19th century, however, under the leadership of Frédéric-Emile Trimbach, that the business began to expand. Success came when he exhibited the wines at an international fair in Brussels in 1898, to much acclaim. Since the days of Frédéric-Emile the house of Trimbach has remained a family run business, based in Ribeauvillé. Today, Jean and Pierre Trimbach are in charge of the winery. The Trimbach family currently own vineyards scattered across three villages, with an emphasis on planting Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and the style associated with the house is one of dry structure and flavorsome with firm acidity where appropriate. Trimbach are not particularly known for their red wines, but they do produce a basic Pinot Noir as well as a Reserve Personelle, as well as basic cuvées of many of the typical Alsatian varieties, including Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. Trimbach produce both late harvest wines of Alsace, the Selection de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives wines, made from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris or Muscat. These make a departure from the classic Trimbach style as they naturally exhibit residual sugar and possibly also characteristics of noble rot, but they still have the necessary acidity to maintain balance and freshness. Golden color, full body, serve very well-chilled to get the crispness still lingering in this wine. Worth decanting for an hour or so before its inner character emerges. I have one more bottle, will report back.

Perhaps just over the hill, but the nose of apples, citrus and a hint of mineral lead to a mouth that was dominated by grass and ethyls..some apple and mineral.

Wine Tasting NotesAbundant ripe fruit on the nose and a creaminess on the palate are brought to life with subtle acidity. Softer and less challenging than other varieties, the wine is still totally dry.

Deep, golden tropical fruit is the theme here. Full-bodied and sublimely flavorful, this wine is incredibly rich, yet fully dry, and it shows great balancing acidity.

Deep, golden, tropical fruit, full in body and flavor, rich yet fully dry.
