I've had quite a few Gewurztraminers, but none of them were Alsatian. Boy was I ever surprised by this one...a whopper of a wine. Medium to full bodied, intense and complex - both on the nose and the palate. The nose is pretty amazing in its complex intensity: sweet peach, candy, vanilla, flowers, honey, apple, and a hint fresh salty minerality (for lack of a better word). This wine is VERY FLORAL...more perfumed than light/fresh/wildflowery. On the palate I get LITCHI fruit, sweet peach, pear, and honey on with a soft tangy acidity. Really juicy and mouthfilling. It does seem kind of oily or viscous, a characteristic that I'd normally associate more with some viogniers. Good length. I would personally have liked to see more acid or counterbalance to the sweetness. This wine was an ok pairing for thai takeout…but I thought it actually seemed too big for the moderately spicy coconut chicken curry! I think this wine would be a killer pairing with a sweeter food. I've seen this wine referred to as delicate, but I think it's anything but! Delicately balanced in its complexity, sure. But this white wine is a heavy hitter as far as I'm concerned! While it is slightly hot, the alcohol is in check and I would not say this wine is unbalanced in that sense.

Winemaker's notes: Gewurztraminer is without a doubt the most distinctive wine from Trimbach. The variety's pronounced fragrance of rose, lychee and spice introduces the rich and often powerful taste adopted around the world as the perfect accompaniment to spicy food. The 2005 Gewurztraminer is dry, with good levels of natural alcohol and plenty of appealing acidity - the Trimbach family's signature.

Winemaker's Notes:

Its delicate bouquet, the fine balance between its dry personality, its distinguished fruitiness and its natural vitality contribute to its exceptional richness. Riesling can be enjoyed throughout the meal, also with Alsace specialties, shellfish, seafood, quality fish, sushi/sashimi, white meats in white wine sauces or spices, pork dishes and refined spicy or Asian dishes.
