Tresillian Pinot Noir 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

We hand-picked the grapes (14 tonnes) in late April 2011. The grapes were transported to the winery in picking baskets to avoid damage from bulk handling. They were tipped into the crusher/destemmer and subject to 4 days cold maceration before fermentation commenced. The primary ferment took place in small open topped fermenters, where the cap was hand plunged regularly. The three clones, (114, 115 and 10/5) were picked and fermented separately and, after both primary and malo-lactic ferments and aging, were blended together to make the final wine.

Tresillian is located on the Canterbury Plains of the South Island of New Zealand. The Estate vineyard is situated on a flat but sheltered site with silt loam soils over ancient riverbed of the Waimakariri river. Canterbury is a "Cool climate" growing region, -which results in  the wines having a loads of fruit characters, natural minerality, and lifted crisp acidity. Overall, the climate is mild and dry, which is emminently suited to producing fine Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling wines. The Family lease vineyards on Banks Peninsula. These lie nestled on the Northern Slopes of French Farm Valley, a very beautiful and tranquil spot. The soils were formed by volcanic action some 7 million years ago. The rich loamy, clay based soils, along with the warmer climate help produce rich Pinot Noir wines, and lifted floral romas in the rieslings. Read less

Tasting Notes:

This wine shows elegant black plum, cherry and berry aromas that follow through to the palate. A forest floor earthiness with subtle hints of mushroom and chocolate to add complexity. Silky tannins enhance the supple mouthfeel. The three clones (114, 115 and 10/5) were fermented in separate tanks, the wine was oak aged for 11 months before blending and bottling.
