Tres Picos Garnacha 08 Spain Aragon Campo de Borja Red 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"The flagship of this portfolio is the perennially outstanding Tres Picos. The 2008 Tres Picos is 100% Garnacha old vines in which 50% was aged in tank and 50% in French oak for 10 months. It gives up a compelling nose of black cherry fruit that jumps from the glass along with earth and mineral notes. Plush on the palate bordering on voluptuous, this pleasure-bent, full-flavored effort will drink well for another 3-4 years although few will be able to resist its charms for that long...91" WA 04/10

Although the history of the city of Borja takes us back to the beginnings of the Paleolithic period, it wasn’t until the 4th century before Christ, in the heart of the Celtiberian period, when thanks to classical and numismatic written sources the name of this village came to light: Bursao. With the passing through Bursao of different civilizations like the Romans, Visigothic Hispania and the Muslims we have inherited architectural remains and above all, the natural inclination of its people towards agriculture and more particularly viniculture. Of equal importance was the implementation of artisanal techniques that today endure as living proof of the cultural richness of the former Bursao today known as Borja. During the I and II centuries, before our time, it used to mint bronze coins, ases and dividers as a symbol of its autonomy. On the obverse of the as we can see a celtiberian rider armed with a lance, riding on the writing of the name of the city in the native alphabet. The emblem adopted by the winery as a sign of identity. Read less

Bright opaque, with red tree fruits in the nose; in the mouth its bright black cherry, berry and spice and everything nice. I think it loved the paprika and chorizo in our paella.

Big right up front, but quickly becomes lush and smooth drinking. An exemplary grenache with all its best qualities and better yet, affordable and readily available. Delicious! 1/7/12

Nose of black cherry fruit with earth and mineral notes. Plush on the palate and richly flavored soft, round berry fruit with a really nice zing. Really, REALLY good! - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 7/3/10

The wine is a deep red/purple color. Aromas of pepper, dark fruit, and chocolate are quite pronounced. It's well-balanced with flavors of dark fruit, vanilla, and mocha. The finish is long, smooth, with a bit of spice.

Dark red fruit with a bit of alcohol on the nose; briar and smoke over top of red fruit on the palate. More tannic than the '07- from less bottle time? Different but still good; same score. (tasted both '07 & '08 on same night)

A very light bodied red with a bit of spice on the tail end. The nose presents raisins and figs but retains a hint of more luscious fruit. The oak is apparent on the palate although by no means a dominant flavor. Balance improves within an hour or two.

Opaque purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of dark berry preserves, smoky minerals, potpourri and Indian spices, with a strong note of cracked pepper; smells like a high-end northern Rhone wine. Very spicy and tightly focused, offering juicy red and dark berry flavors and sexy notes of candied flowers and cocoa powder. Finishes with a wallop of sweet red berries and lingering, seductive spiciness; as ridiculous a value as one can find these days. The yield for this wine was reportedly under two tons per acre. Tres Picos, or Three Peaks, ranks as a go-to wine for fans of round, smooth, slightly oaky reds. The bouquet is all mocha and smoky/oaky richness, while the sticky, rich palate deals blackberry and chewy, rooty medicinality. Oaky and spicy late, with licorice and warmth. The best thing is that it's not heavy or overextracted despite being youthful and modern in style. M.S. This modern red offers opulent ripe blackberry and currant fruit framed by toast and cola notes, with a plush texture that remains lively, thanks to well-integrated tannins and good acidity. Drink now through 2014. 5,000 cases imported. -TM

The 2008 Monte Oton is more expressive aromatically. Spicy and vibrant on the palate and with a bit more depth and structure, this crowd-pleaser should also drink well for at least another 3-4 years.

Bodegas Borsao consistently delivers great bang for the buck. Several of their value-priced wines are listed on the Best Buy chart at the end of this report. If I had to select just one Spanish wine that consistently over-delivers year after year, it would be Tres Picos. The 2006 Tres Picos Garnacha has an enticing bouquet of wild cherry, spice box, and floral notes that leaps from the glass. Remarkably rich, balanced, and intensely flavored, this wine can be best described as cherry pie in a glass. It is for hedonists only. As always, it is an awesome value.
