Tres Ojos Garnacha Calatayud Old Vines 2005

Member Review by GoinGray:

Scents of smoke, cherry, and a bit of caramel. Medium body, very dry, with a warm finish.

Fresh aromas of dark fruit, wet earth and herbs - especially eucalyptus. Warm, earthly flavors with soft black cherry, cassis and graphite. Taut structure with medium-high alcohol, smooth tannins & medium-long finish. Excellent value at $8.50. 14.5%abv

For any Australian wine drinker looking for something new, Spanish Garnachas are the logical choice. The Tres Ojos is deliciously juicy, bursting with bright berry fruit, and finishes with a touch of earth. Easy to drink by itself as a cocktail, or serve it out at the grill with barbecue chicken.

Pale reddish-maroon in color and medium-bodied. Made from 100% Garnacha grapes, this is as good a value as you will find in Spanish reds. The nose is lively and the ripe fruit (raspberry, strawberry) lends a touch of sweetness that is countered by black pepper and earthiness on the finish. After many different tastings, it has yet to disappoint.

The 2007 Old Vines Garnacha, sourced from 40-50 year old vines, was aged for 12 months in stainless steel. Purple-colored, the nose exhibits spice box, violets, and black cherry. On the palate it has plenty of supple-textured, succulent fruit and a finish with no hard edges. Drink it over the next three years.

Bright ruby color. Primary dark berry aromas are simple but offer very good purity and focus. Juicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors are youthfully tangy, with good back-end acidity adding snap. The clean, brisk finish leaves behind notes of sweet dark berry preserves and cracked pepper. As usual, this is a very good bargain, even with the lousy dollar.

The 2004 Tres Ojos Tinto is made from 100% Garnacha old-vines (40-50 years). This delicious, fruity wine offers spice, pepper, and cherry aromas and kirsch-like flavors reminiscent of a quality Cotes du Rhone. It is a superb value.

A delicious offering (as well as a super bargain) from this backwater region, Tres Ojos' 2003 Garnacha Old Vines was made by a cooperative, and selected by innovative importer Fran Kysela. A soft, seductive, fruity, kirsch liqueur-filled Spanish version of a Cotes du Rhone, it possesses medium body, loads of personality, and a sexy, heady palate. Enjoy it over the next 1-2 years.

Deep red. Lush raspberry and candied cherry aromas, with hints of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Ripe and lush, with good weight and depth to its raspberry and strawberry flavors. No obvious tannins get in the way of the rich, sappy red fruit. An excellent value.
