Trentham Nebbiolo 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Almost half a century ago, the first vines were planted at Trentham Cliffs in far west New South Wales. Trentham Estate is part of the former sheep station called 'Trentham Cliffs' which was settled in the 1930's by the Chanter family. In 1948-49 the riverfront was developed into horticultural properties, and so began the settlement of Trentham Cliffs. Trentham Estate is a small boutique winery specialising in varietal grape growing and production, situated on the New South Wales side of the Murray River, some 15km from Mildura. The Murphy family were pioneers who first established vineyards at Merbein in the Sunraysia area in 1909. John Murphy, who bought Trentham Estate, died in 1997 leaving his sons Patrick and Anthony as the Estate's viticulturist and chief winemaker. Each brother is an expert in his particular field. Nebbiolo is the king of north western Italian red varieties notably in the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. In the vineyard the variety looks unimpressive with variable crops, fruit colour ranging from light to deeply coloured red, and almost wild canopy growth.This wine is only our fourth release of this variety and we think one of our best yet. Fairly lightly coloured, the wine shows a complex nose of leather, berry fruits and light oak while the taste is medium weight with fine grained tannins and a long savoury finish. A great match with traditional Italian cuisine where the wine will not dominate the food but marry beautifully with the rich robust flavours.

Trentham' s winery has been operating since 1988, where it has grown from the initial 30 tonne crush, to a minimal but state-of-the-art facility handling 2,000 tonnes of premium fruit each vintage. It allows the flexibility to perform different winemaking styles, resulting in the diverse and always consistent Trentham Estate wines. Anthony Murphy, Chief Winemaker and Managing Director, oversees all wine production. Anthony graduated from Roseworthy College with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Oenology and began winemaking at Mildara Blass. Anthony is passionate about many alternative grape varieties, such as Viognier, Petit Verdot and Taminga, and enjoys experimenting each vintage with a new style. In 2006 Anthony and his brother (and Trentham's viticulturist) Pat Murphy, were nominated for Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's 'Winemaker of the Year' award - the first winemaking team from an irrigated Murray region to be nominated. The latest alternative wines from us include the new additions to the La Famiglia range - a Vermentino and Sangiovese Rose.
