What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

winemaker's notes:
One of the noble grapes from the region of Bordeaux, France. The name means little blackbird in Bordeaux patois, probably named for the birds found around the region, though it is not clear whether so named because the clusters resembled the birds or the birds enjoyed eating the grapes. It is a relatively modern grape varietal, being noted only as far back as the late eighteenth century in Bordeaux. It is also a grape varietal that excels in the Alexander Valley. Sumptuous black cherry fruit and soft, full, and supple texture. Balanced and added structure from a small read more...

With dark berry and smokey toasted oak, cocoa and a hint vanilla the 2006 Trentadue Alexander Valley Merlot has all the essential elements of a fine wine (compare to the more expensive Bell Merlot) at bargain (< $20) price. This is a terrific value for a wine with this level of balance and complexity.

Lots of tannins for a merlot - I really thought it was a cab based blend, however, learned that it was 100% merlot. After the shock of the tannins I could taste a lot of spice, blueberries and plums - typical merlot fare. But then the finish threw me again, in that it was meaty, and had so much structure.

A merlot for cab lovers.
