Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon Oak Knoll Reserve 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

About Trefethen
In 1968, our family purchased seven farms surrounding a magnificent, but run-down, 19th-century winery in southern Napa Valley and created Trefethen Family Vineyards. At the time, there were fewer than 30 working wineries in Napa Valley. True to our original vision of creating a classic wine estate, we have never purchased a single outside grape. Instead, we lavish extraordinary care on our two sustainably farmed estate vineyards in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Controlling all viticultural practices allows us to produce grapes with pure, intense flavors beautifully reflecting our unique terroir.

Our Estate Vineyard
Our 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon represents a blend of grapes from our two Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley estate vineyards. Planted in dry, rocky soils, our Hillspring vineyard's vines yield wines with intense, spicy fruit aromas and flavors, while our Main Ranch's valley floor vines, planted in richer, alluvial soils, produce wines with bright fruit and a velvety texture.

The 2002 Vintage
An April frost and May rains were followed by ideal summer growing conditions of warm days and cool nights. Hot weather in late September accelerated ripening, but cooler temperatures in October allowed the grapes to develop concentrated fruit flavors, resulting in red wines with excellent color and intense, balanced flavors.

Vinification
After de-stemming and crushing, the grapes were cold soaked for three days and inoculated with specific yeast strains. The wine was blended with 6% Merlot and aged in French Oak barrels for 29 months.

The Wine
Redolent of ripe, wild cherry, black raspberry and currant fruit, with subtle scents of mint, pepper and sweet oak adding complexity and nuance. On the richly textured palate, the wine's concentrated cherry and dark berry fruit flavors gain a savory spice tone on the long, layered finish.

Food Affinities
Pair with the finest cuts of full-flavored beef, lamb and game, especially dishes incorporating the complementary flavors of thyme, peppercorns and caramelized onions.

Constructed in 1886 by a Scottish sea captain, Hamden McIntyre, our winery was originally known as Eshcol. McIntyre designed it as a gravity-flow system: a horse-drawn winch brought grapes to the third floor of the three-story structure for crushing; gravity carried the juice to the second floor for fermenting; and, eventually, the wine descended to the first floor for aging. Eshcol was among a number of wineries McIntyre designed during this period; the others were Greystone (now The Culinary Institute of America), Far Niente and Inglenook. During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Napa Valley was a thriving viticultural community with nearly 140 wineries. However, in the late 1890s, phylloxera, a root louse that destroys grapevines, brought wine production in Napa to a crashing halt. Growers soon recovered with re-planted vines, but in 1920, Prohibition arrived, driving a stake through the heart of the wine business. The old Eshcol facility survived by making sacramental wines, but by 1940 was dormant. When the Trefethen family purchased the property in 1968, the winery had fallen into serious disrepair. John and Janet committed themselves to restoring the building to its former glory. They carefully researched the winery’s past and worked for years to restore it. Aside from replacing the dirt floor on the first level with concrete, they made no significant structural changes. The Trefethens’ restoration efforts were recognized in 1988 by the Department of the Interior, which placed the winery on the National Register of Historic Places as the only 19th-century, wooden, gravity-flow winery surviving in Napa County. Today, Trefethen boasts a state-of-the-art fermentation facility and 13,000 square foot barrel cellar, but the McIntyre Building remains integral to the winery’s operations. The first floor is still used to age wine and also houses the winery’s Estate Tasting Room and Wine Library. The second floor, which displays the Eshcol winery’s original de-stemmer/crusher, is a barrel-aging cellar for the winery’s Bordeaux variety red wines. Read less

This wine hits immediately with a great plum flavor. Incredibly sweet mouthfeel.

A nose of dark fruits - really dark fruits - prunes and raisins. Very concentrated fruity wine with very soft tannins (a smidgin of tartness though) - still very nice. Still showing a touch too much tannin on the finish, its still an excellent wine. Give it a few more years.
