A nose of dark fruits - really dark fruits - prunes and raisins. Very concentrated fruity wine with very soft tannins (a smidgin of tartness though) - still very nice. Still showing a touch too much tannin on the finish, its still an excellent wine. Give it a few more years.

About Trefethen<BR> In 1968, our family purchased seven farms surrounding a magnificent, but run-down, 19th-century winery in southern Napa Valley and created Trefethen Family Vineyards. At the time, there were fewer than 30 working wineries in Napa Valley. True to our original vision of creating a classic wine estate, we have never purchased a single outside grape. Instead, we lavish extraordinary care on our two sustainably farmed estate vineyards in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Controlling all viticultural practices allows us to produce grapes with pure, intense flavors beautifully reflecting our unique terroir. <BR> <P> Our Estate Vineyard<BR> Our 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon represents a blend of grapes from our two Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley estate vineyards. Planted in dry, rocky soils, our Hillspring vineyard's vines yield wines with intense, spicy fruit aromas and flavors, while our Main Ranch's valley floor vines, planted in richer, alluvial soils, produce wines with bright fruit and a velvety texture. <BR> <P> The 2002 Vintage<BR> An April frost and May rains were followed by ideal summer growing conditions of warm days and cool nights. Hot weather in late September accelerated ripening, but cooler temperatures in October allowed the grapes to develop concentrated fruit flavors, resulting in red wines with excellent color and intense, balanced flavors. <BR> <P> Vinification<BR> After de-stemming and crushing, the grapes were cold soaked for three days and inoculated with specific yeast strains. The wine was blended with 6% Merlot and aged in French Oak barrels for 29 months. <BR> <P> The Wine<BR> Redolent of ripe, wild cherry, black raspberry and currant fruit, with subtle scents of mint, pepper and sweet oak adding complexity and nuance. On the richly textured palate, the wine's concentrated cherry and dark berry fruit flavors gain a savory spice tone on the long, layered finish. <BR> <P> Food Affinities<BR> Pair with the finest cuts of full-flavored beef, lamb and game, especially dishes incorporating the complementary flavors of thyme, peppercorns and caramelized onions.
