Treana White 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Rather intense and slightly hot on the nose with aromas of oak, roasted herbs, dried plum, dried cherry and coffee. Soft, slightly opaque, and low in the mouth, this creeps over the palate blanketing it with layers of spicy oak, roasted herbs, black cherries and something vaguely resembling dried apricots. The tannins build on the back end and turn slightly aggressive on the finish which has a tactile, extracted feel to it and lingering alcoholic heat accompanying the jammy black cherry fruit. A bit monolithic and extracted for my tastes, but this will be immensely appealing to those who enjoy more powerful wines. 87pts

Sandy soil tone with fine herbal elements. A bit of burnt rubber and some dried citrus peel notes. This does smell a bit alcoholic though it has a nice black cherry jam note on the nose. Lots of fruit up front with red cherry, red currant and dried strawberry fruit. Some nice mineral notes offer contrast and cut on the palate of this rather large scaled wine. This leans towards being a bit sweet and jammy though it has enough tannin and minerality to cut through the fruit particularly on the finish, which shows some dusty mineral notes, slightly drying tannins and a touch of heat 91pts

If you want a good bang for your buck, liberty school cab is it. It definitely tastes like a much higher priced wine. I buy this by the case

Sampled this wine at a wine tasting at the Ridge Tahoe in Stateline, NV. This one divided the wine tasters, some of them thinking it odd or too sweet and the others liking it a lot. I fell in with the latter. I am far from a wine connoisseur but I've never had a wine quite like this. I found it intriguing. The wine was very smooth yet still complex both in taste and bouquet. In fact, I wasn't sure how to pair this wine, but I had the good fortune of sitting next to some independent wine makers and they suggested pork dishes. I'll have to try that.

A deeply extracted, ruby hue and displays up-front aromas of ripe, dark fruit and exotic spice. Depth and power come from the Cabernet, while a Syrah component lends inviting fleshiness. The wine's full mouthfeel leads to a silky, lasting finish.

Treana White is a blend of 50% Viognier and 50% Marsanne. These two varieties, indigenous to the Rhone Valley in France, flourish in California's Central California white Rhone blends with the release of the 1996 Treana White. The majority of the fruit in this blend is from Santa Lucia Highlands, which benefits from the cooling breezes coming off of Monterey Bay. The 2010 Treana White's color is reminiscent of the golden hillsides of the California Central Coast at harvest time. 50% Marsanne and 50% Viognier. The Wine Spectator said "The rich peach, marmalade and apricot flavors are round and smooth, with good intensity and a softly refreshing acidity. Details of spice, mineral and toasted nut appear on the finish. Drink now through 2018."

1996 was the first release of Treana. The Hope Family created this winery to produce this special blend of Rhone and California varietals. Since its inception it has been a major success, displaying the richness and character of these grapes and how well the flavors meld together. This latest release is all from their vineyards in Paso Robles and blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Syrah. The varietals were aged separately in French oak barrels half of which were new for 10-14 months. After the blend was made the wine isreturned to the barrels so the flavors can intertwine. The bold intensity is what you expect but what's unexpected is the supple, mouth-filling ripeness of this 2010. No scores in for this one but 91 and 92 for the previous vintage and this one turned out even better! On Sale!

Inky ruby. Powerful, smoke-tinged aromas of cherry-cola, cassis and fruitcake. Sweet, spicy and expansive, offering powerful black and blue fruit flavors and a hint of allspice. Nicely concentrated and supple, with strong back-end power and smooth, harmonious tannins adding shape.

Treana White is an equal blend of Viognier and Marsanne. These two varieties, indigenous to the Rhône Valley in France, prosper in California’s Central Coast. The Hope family helped pioneer the now-thriving category of California white Rhône blends over the past 15 vintages. The majority of the fruit in this blend is from the Santa Lucia Highlands, which benefits from the cooling breezes coming off of Monterey Bay. 50% Marsanne and 50% Viognier. All but 5% of the wine is barrel fermented in French oak and then aged on the lies for 9 months. The 2011 Treana White is pale golden straw in color and exhibits vibrant aromatics. A bold bouquet of stone fruit and white flowers are followed by hints of honey and nutty notes of pecan and almond. On the palate, rich flavors of melon, peach and honey follow with an oily mid-palate, and a bright finish. Due in part to the ageability of Marsanne, Treana White has a trusted history of aging 10+ years. A bold and distinctive white wine, On Sale!
