Travaglini Giancarlo Gattinara 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very reticent at first with a sweet and astringent fruit note over oystershell with a touch of cigar ash. The roasted cherry fruit does come to life but remains a bit low key on the nose. In the mouth this starts out a bit clumsily with good chewy fruit and nicely nuanced black pepper and smoke notes framing the fruit. It gains sweetness to the fruit but not tremendous length. A solid yet uninspired showing. 2009-2011 86pts

Travaglini:
The Travaglini winegrowing company, based in the heart of the hills of the Gattinara region, has 55 ha used for wine production. There are 39 ha currently planted with vines and the rest is pending plantation. Both the “GATTINARA DOCG”, a highly structured wine for ageing, and a small part of the young wine known as “CINZIA”, are produced from the Nebbiolo grape variety (known locally as "Spanna".

4 Stars. lighter than the 2009, obviously a reflection of the weather. Appreciated by the guests; none the less. I explained the front and back challenges and they better understood Nebbiolo varietal from Piedmont. Cheers.

2008 Gattinara worth every sip. Enjoy now +8 years cellared. Expect blueberries, vanilla and white pepper first if decanted for 30 mins. Nice job.Travaglini.. William @ Barolo.

Exactly what I (we Barolo Rist.) needed this weekend. The Gattinara was subtle and full light with feistiness that was enjoyed. -I am really happy to serve this 100% Nebbiolo not sure what to expect. - Wine notes. Blueberry, White pepper and vanilla. Full mouth feel for a light body wine. Alive...

This Gattinara from Travaglini comes from the excellent 2004 vintage and does not disappoint. Now turning brick red and smelling of Maraschino Cherries and woody mountain herbs, this wine enters the mouth with suave viscosity and balance. Time for further aging is evident with the medium tannins, but drinking well now.

Gattinara 2010 - 90 Points, Vinous/ The 2010 Gattinara is a firm, classically austere wine with persistent tannins and a slightly compact personality. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 puts on weight in bottle, or if the tannins soften, as today, the wine is very much shut down. Sweet dried cherries, tobacco, crushed herbs and dried flowers add shades of nuance through the middle and finish. I have seen Travaglini wines blossom with age before, although I don't really see that happening here.

Gattinara D.O.C.G. 2010 - 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast/ Enticing aromas of pressed rose, iris and perfumed berry lead the nose, with a whiff of cake spice on this straightforward red. The elegant, enjoyable palate offers sour red cherry, raspberry, white pepper and a hint star anise alongside firm, refined tannins. A tobacco note signals the close.

Gattinara "Tre Vigne" D.O.C.G. 2009 - 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast/ Loaded with finesse, this luminous, structured wine opens with enticing aromas of pressed rose, wild berry, clove and a balsamic note. The polished, delicious palate smacks of raspberry jelly, wild cherry, cinnamon and star anise alongside bright acidity and lithe tannins. A mineral note energizes the lingering finish. Drink 2018–2029.

Gattinara "Tre Vigne" DOCG 2009 - 92 Points, JamesSuckling.com/ Perfumed, pretty red with lots of nebbiolo character, showing tea, cedar, plum and citrus aromas and flavors. Medium body, firm tannins. Austere. Lively and ready. Drink now.

Gattinara Delivers Bold Flavor at Moderate Price/ Gattinara's current reputation rests on a few forward-thinking producers who are making wines with a body and flavor that approach those of Barbaresco and Barolo. One of the leaders is Travaglini, which has been making the wine since 1958 and is still a family business. Also good is the non-riserva from 1997. It's a bit lighter in body but a paragon of what Gattinara should taste like, with spicy minerals and a burst of bouquet.

Piedmont Perfection: Travaglini is Not Just a Pretty Bottle; It's a Superb Wine/ An approachable wine, with characteristic aromas of rose and violet, along with cherry. Nicely textured, earthy notes, offering a note of anise, with flavors of plum and berry, and it has a fairly long finish. You can drink now or cellar for a few years.

/ There is an intensity about this treasure that suggests black currants and anise as well as allspice and smoke. Chunky in weight with notes of chocolate and elderberries. A wine that says "drink me" and you will want to. Now-2018.
