Travaglini Gattinara Trevigne 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep garnet ruby-red color. It is a full and harmonic wine, the bouquet verges on dried fruit, violet, blackberry, raspberry with hints of spices coming form the barrels. A very refined and prestigious wine. Deep, dry and full-bodied taste, long and lingering with the correct degree of tannin.

Travaglini:
The Travaglini winegrowing company, based in the heart of the hills of the Gattinara region, has 55 ha used for wine production. There are 39 ha currently planted with vines and the rest is pending plantation. Both the “GATTINARA DOCG”, a highly structured wine for ageing, and a small part of the young wine known as “CINZIA”, are produced from the Nebbiolo grape variety (known locally as "Spanna".

Un vino di 13 anni che conserva ancora il profumo di viola selvatica. Un vino dai tannini raffinati, di media persistenza dal colore aranciato diffuso. Sentori di mora e frutti a bacca rossa.

Black Cherry, Oak and ""ashtray"" on the nose along with a little skittles and green pepper. This wine had high acidity and pleasing tannins with black cherry, cigar and oak characteristics. The 13.5% alcohol was noticable, but not overpowering. This wine paired very well with food. Combined this wine with Spinach Goat Cheese & Walnut salad (with warm balsamic dressing) and Lobster Risotto at neighborhood italian restaurant. Great food wine. Interesting bottle -- not designed for easy storage!

This wine was a little tight upon opening, but kept on opening and opening up throughout the meal. A great layering of aroma... black cherry and licorice sitting above a wonderful earthiness. A spiciness fills the mouth and this wine gives a long lasting finish throughout the mouth.
