Travaglini Gattinara Piedmont 2005
Deep ruby-red with garnet reflections. Charming and structured bouquet recalling red fruit, blackberry, plum and liquorice with hints of vanilla, cream and leather. Full-bodied, dry and deep flavor with a fruity accent underlined by a slight sapidity. Long and persistent aftertaste.
The Travaglini winegrowing company, based in the heart of the hills of the Gattinara region, has 55 ha used for wine production. There are 39 ha currently planted with vines and the rest is pending plantation. Both the “GATTINARA DOCG”, a highly structured wine for ageing, and a small part of the young wine known as “CINZIA”, are produced from the Nebbiolo grape variety (known locally as "Spanna".
External Reviews for Travaglini Gattinara Piedmont
The 2005 Gattinara is a pretty, mid-weight Nebbiolo. Sweet cherries, tobacco, herbs and crushed flowers are some of the notes that emerge from this classy, refined red. The Gattinara is a somewhat fleeting, ethereal wine, but it has the freshness and firmness to age well for at least another decade. This entry-level Gattinara possesses tons of varietal character in a translucent, weightless expression that is typical of the appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Displays very ripe fruit, with notes of dried red fruits and plum and hints of slightly green wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins. Theres a little too much wood, but this should come around nicely. Best after 2010. 15,000 cases made. -JS
