Trapiche Iscay Merlot Malbec 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A nice red to serve slightly chilled with summer barbecue! This smells very fruity and ripe with notes of prune, plum and dark cherry with a bit of smoky oak. In the mouth this is very easy with soft tannins and a gentle sweetness coming from the spicy oak. The fruit is fresher than the nose would suggest, bright and with very soft tannins, it's a bit of a fruit bomb, with a touch of brambly spice offering a touch of complexity. 84pts

The Trapiche team was immensely proud to receive the Trophy for the "Argentinian Wine Producer of the Year 2006", awarded by a jury of wine experts on October 31st in London. When the IWSC, one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world, created the trophy for "Argentinian wine producer of the year" in 2004, Trapiche was the first winery ever to receive it. The trophy was created because of the growing importance of the Argentina category within the industry; P&O Nedlloyd Logistics is the official sponsor. History repeats itself. Being awarded the trophy again is the proof that Trapiche is paving the way in Argentina´s wine industry, both in terms of quality and innovation. The winner is designated on the basis of its general performance at the IWSC 2006 and Trapiche won the only Gold Medal for an Argentinian wine with Medalla 2003. According to the competition officials, "Each year, the International Wine and Spirit Competition commends the achievements of those members of the wine and spirit trade who make an outstanding contribution to the industry. These individuals or companies set the standards of excellence for the rest of the industry to follow and influence the quality, variety, value, and educational information available to the wine and spirit consumer." Undoubtedly this trophy consolidates Trapiche´s leadership in the Argentinian wine industry. Read less

An enjoyable dark red Malbec. Still fairly young and a little thin. Rich in plum/prunes and slightly earthy. Great value for a table wine.

My Rating 83: Well balanced nose with some complexity. Taste a little dry and astringent with little complexity. I paid only $ 3.- ( on Sale!!). For that money it is a fantastic bargain.

The color of this is remarkable, extremely dark, which is how I remember malbecs I've had in the past and is the trademark of this grape for me. The other review here from Athon describes Trapiche quite well, nothing more I could add.

This Malbec shows loads of spicy black fruits, with hints of tobacco. Juicy on the palate, this is an easy-to-drink, ripe Malbec to enjoy now. - Winery

A rich, red-colored wine with violet hues, redolent ofplums and cherries. Round in the mouth with a touch oftruffle and vanilla.

A dark, winey style, with slightly rigid structure supporting the dark linzer torte, boysenberry and plum fruit. A toasty edge holds sway on the slightly stolid finish. Drink now. 58,000 cases made. -JM

Aromatic with ripe fruit flavors and a taste that is dry with appealing red berry flavors and soft tannins. An easy drinking wine that matches well with lighter meats such as fish and pasta dishes.
