Trace Wines Chardonnay 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The majority of the Chardonnay in this blend is grown in the Russian River Valley appellation. The marine influence of early morning fog off the Pacific Ocean and warm afternoons, slowly ripen the Chardonay grown here, limiting the risk of over ripeness. The balance of the Chardonnay for this blend is carefully selected from vineyards in Sonoma Valley and the Carneros region. Night harvesting allows the preservation of the Chardonay’s delicate flavors, aromas and acidity. The grapes are then 100% whole cluster pressed and fermented in different lots, then barrel aged for six months in both French and American oak barrels prior to blending. The barrels are lees stirred by hand during aging to achieve a rich, lush mouthfeel. The wine then undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation.

When Joe and Emma Martin purchased the 100 acre Behler Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma Valley in 1971, they never could have expected the success that their vineyard would achieve. After several years of making grapes for other wineries, they decided to start their own winery in 1979, and they have been producing quality wines ever since. They called the winery St. Francis Winery, named after St. Francis of Assisi, protector of the natural world, and in honor of the Franciscan order, thought to be the first to bring European grape cultivation to America. St. Francis currently has 600 acres under vine in Sonoma County, with many partnerships with other vineyards in the area, including Rockpile Vineyard, Amman Ranch, Leras Ranch, and Pagani Ranch. Each of their wines are produced from 100% hand-picked Sonoma fruit, but that’s not enough to produce such bold, full-bodied wines. It is the hard work of Tom Mackey, Director of Winemaking, and the other winemakers at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards that allows these great wines to be produced, year after year. Read less

Scents of spice, hay, and a touch of honeysuckle. Just a bit of oak, lemon and spice, with a salty finish.

Fruit and pear aromas are offset on the palate by hints of oak and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, this Chardonnay has ripe fruit flavors, crisp high acid in the mouth, and a rich lingering finish.

Trim and flinty, showing quince, lemon, citrus peel, lime and green pear flavors that are delicate and complex. Drink now through 2013.

The melon and honey flavors of this wine gain their structure from oak, and from the maltiness of the lees. It finishes soft. Serve chilled as an aperitif.

Delivers an intriguing array of tangerine and nectarine flavors, which are atypical for this varietal, yet it doesnrsquo;t shortchange on flavor. Drink now.

Fifty percent of the 1999 Chardonnay Sonoma is fermented in American oak. It possesses a Macirc;connais-like character that reveals subdued oak and prominent fruit (citrus and other tropical fruit), medium body, and a clean, refreshing finish.

Ginger, orange peel and Asian spices give this a tea-like flavor. The texture is unctous, the finish toasty and brown, sweet enough for a Vietnamese fish curry.

The barrel component adds a toasty complexity to complement the fruit and pear aromas on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, this Chardonnay has ripe fruit flavors, crisp, high acid in the mouth and a rich, lingering finish.

This ripe, lush, direct Chardonnay is a classic Sonoma expression of the grape, with overt tropical fruit and apple flavors, rich toasty oak notes and a crisp, supple finish.
