Touquinheiras Reserva Vinho Verde Quinta Das Touquinheiras 2007

Member Review by mikegriffin:

My 4seasons notes say "a perfect example of Vinho Verde". If that is the case, they can keep it in Portugal. This wine reminded me of the retched white wines I choked down in places in the eastern Mediterranean while eating goat cheese garnished salads which were the only thing edible that I could find. It has all of the bad oily aftertaste of a lousy Riesling with none of the delightful floral nose or sweetess. Yuck.

Quinta das Touquinheiras made its first impression during a blind tasting competition of Vinho Verde wines, winning the coveted Vinho Verde Award. This led José Luis Gonçalves de Araújo to purchase more vineyards, and in 1995, the wine Touquinheiras Alvarinho made its first appearance. Quinta das Touquinheiras is a 14 hectare estate winery located in the northern region of Vinho Verde. In 2001, the daughter of José Luis Gonçalves de Araújo, Clementina Araújo, took the leadership of the production. The winery now produces Touquinheiras Alvarinho, Clémen Reserva (a blend of Alvarinho and Trajadura grapes), as well as brandy. The most utmost of care is taken in both the vineyard and the winery. All grapes are 100% hand-harvested to ensure quality of fruit, followed by gentle pneumatic pressing and extended maceration at controlled temperatures. The high quality of the grapes, combined with the skill of winemaker, Anselmo Mendes (one of Portugal´s top oenologists), creates wine of true character, passion, purity and integrity. Read less

Hi! I enjoyed this wine with a chicken Caesar salad last night. My friend from Argentina brought it over. It was smooth and very "drinkable". The entire bottle was gone before we realized it. I would love to have more!!

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a white wine drinker, generally. I use it cooking and occasionally stumble across something surprising. I found this surprising. It's dry, which I find pleasing, and a bit carbonated- which put me in mind of champagne - except that it was considerably more interesting. Nothing sweet about it, but no acid either.

I'm not sure where the oiliness came from in the previous review. I don't taste that at all. It's a very dry white wine, so it's not for those of you who like the sweeter kind. To me, it's crisp clear, somewhat citrusy, and even tiny bit carbonated. Very refreshing wine.
