I loved the 2001 Mas La Plana. I've only tried the 2003 once. It was a bit young for me. I'm holding two bottles to try in 2008. It is hard to say right now whether it will improve significantly.

Excellent blend of dark sweet cherry, heavy vanilla and spice, liquorice and dark fruit. The flavour complexity generated goes really well and leaves the drinker very satisifed.

Given to me opened by Anthony. Very smooth for a Cabernet, aromas of chocolate and cherry, not as spicy for a cab, and aging very slowly. Should try again once I can develop a taste for expensive wine. Pairings: decent with red meat, probably better with a spicy, thick dish like turkey with stuffing or sausage and peppers over spaghetti

A core of fleshy plum and currant fruit is accented by vanilla, coffee and a hint of tar. There’s a slightly rustic character, but this is solid and well-integrated, with a lingering floral note on the finish. Best after 2008.

Still, I’d leave this one in storage for at least another five years.

Brutal heat didn’t do a lot for Mas La Plana in 2003. While still a worthy wine, this one shows some green on the nose and palate, while the balance is weightier than normal. In its favor, there’s bold blackberry and a touch of cola on the palate. Good but not up to the wine’s usual high standards.

Wine Tasting NotesDeep, dark cherry color. Intense and complex aroma reminiscent of plum and blackberry jam, as well as spicy hints of sandalwood and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is majestic with silky tannins that give it density and elegance. A long and voluptuous finish, with fine hints of coffee and indications of mint.
