Tormaresca Neprica Puglia 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

VINEYARD HISTORY: • Tormaresca was founded in 1998 with the investment and vision of the Antinori family in Italy’s Puglia region. • The Tormaresca estate is comprised of two properties: Bocca di Lupo is 820 feet above sea level and is located in Murgia. Masseria Maime is located in the Salento region. • Neprica is produced from grapes from both estates. • Neprica is a red blend named for and comprised of Negroamaro, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon. VINIFICATION: • The grapes were picked at the optimal degree of ripeness and vinified separately in thermo-conditioned stainless steel tanks. • The maceration lasted between eight and ten days. • Malolactic fermentation was completed by the beginning of winter. • The majority of the wine was refined for eight months in stainless steel tanks. • A small percentage of the wine was aged in small, neutral oak barrels. TASTING NOTES: Intensely ruby red in color, the wine shows fresh notes of plums and cherries as well as rose and spices, like licorice and chocolate. The wine has ample structure but is soft and elegant with a savory minerality as well. The notes of red fruit return on the lengthy finish. BLEND: 40% Negroamaro 30% Primitivo 30% Cabernet Sauvignon ALCOHOL: 13% Vol.

Viticulture in Puglia is history and at the same time innovation. Cultivation of wines started thousands of years ago, at the time of "Magna Grecia", to which the Greek origins of many names of Apulian grape varieties attests. Tradition continues through the presence of native varieties such as Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo, both true expressions of a strong and extra-ordinary vital territory. The production of high quality wines is related to recent steps towards innovation and creativity: substantial changes have been obtained through the use of modern viticulture techniques and the introduction of non native grape varieties (i.e. Chardonnay and Cabernet) that express themselves in this "terroir" in a completely unique way. Tormaresca is the expression of the above two souls. Character, personality and top quality are the characteristics that Puglia transmits to the native grape varieties. For this reason the Antinori family gave birth to Tormaresca in 1998 when they started investing in Puglia, considering it one of the most promising regions in Italy for the production of high quality wines with a strong territorial identity. Vintage: 2013 12/14/2016

VINTAGE • The 2013 vintage was characterized by a heterogeneous vegetative cycle with normal temperatures and rainfall in the spring. • Higher temperatures in summer favored excellent growth and cluster development and the climate remained warm and dry. • The vines adapted to the lack of rain during the summer with a balance of vineyard maintenance and cultivation techniques, preventing over-exposure of the grapes to the sun. • The grapes were picked at the end of August, typically in the first hours of the day to preserve all the aromas and characteristics of the varietal. TASTING NOTES: Brilliantly ruby red in color the wine has aromas of fresh red fruit, like plums and cherries as well as floral notes of rose and violet. The 2013 vintage has excellent structure and is supple on the palate with an elegant return to the red fruit notes on the long finish. BLEND: 40% Negroamaro 30% Primitivo 30% Cabernet Sauvignon ALCOHOL: 13.5% Vol.
