Tormaresca Antinori Pietra Bianca Chardonnay Castel del Monte Apulia 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Bordeaux-like in its structure and flavor profile. Tightly wound, firm and compact, with dried currant, sage, mineral and hints of cedar and leather, fanning out on the finish, where the flavors are juicy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2012 through 2019. 2,000 cases made

Viticulture in Puglia is history and at the same time innovation. Cultivation of wines started thousands of years ago, at the time of "Magna Grecia", to which the Greek origins of many names of Apulian grape varieties attests. Tradition continues through the presence of native varieties such as Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo, both true expressions of a strong and extra-ordinary vital territory. The production of high quality wines is related to recent steps towards innovation and creativity: substantial changes have been obtained through the use of modern viticulture techniques and the introduction of non native grape varieties (i.e. Chardonnay and Cabernet) that express themselves in this "terroir" in a completely unique way. Tormaresca is the expression of the above two souls. Character, personality and top quality are the characteristics that Puglia transmits to the native grape varieties. For this reason the Antinori family gave birth to Tormaresca in 1998 when they started investing in Puglia, considering it one of the most promising regions in Italy for the production of high quality wines with a strong territorial identity. 97 points - Wine & Spirits Magazine"...It tastes like an authentic California wine, with the flavor of mountain-grown fruit-tiny berries, very dark in color and not a lot of them. The tannins have the intensity of wild blueberries, a soft power that's friendly rather than austere. Its fresh, bright floral aspects combine seamlessly with the structure, pointing up the wine's youthful beauty. The moderate alcohol (13.4 percent) is just one more factor that predicts a long life ahead for this wine." (12/08)95 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, yellow rose, Asian spices and vanilla bean; you could use this for incense. Deep and sweet but remarkably precise, offering powerful dark berry and kirsch flavors supported by substantial, velvety tannins. The fruit plows through the finish with superb energy, depth and clarity, fully absorbing the tannins. A big but wonderfully balanced example of Monte Bello, and sure to reward extended cellaring." (Nov/Dec 07)93 points and 2 Stars - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine"This bottling begins with deep and yet very mannerly aromas of cassis, pencil lead and violets and builds with complex, claret-like flavors that combine poise and richness. So finely fit as to be almost seamless, it has the balance and layering to invite a decade and more of cellaring." (December 2008)

This wine is brimming with dark cherries and baking spice. Undertones of leather and Licorice are elegantly framed by sweet vanilla from the French oak barrel aging.

There is a remarkable balance and refinement in this wine you don't typically find in other Central Coast Cabernet. Lovely fruit notes of boysenberry and maraschino cherry, fold into flavors of spice-box, cedar and mineral. Deep, velvety and long in the finish. Terrific stuff.
