Tormaresca Aglianico Castel del Monte Bocca di Lupo 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2001 Bocca di Lupo is a wine which demonstrates that the Aglianico grown in the northwestern part of Puglia, just a short distance from the Basilicata, can compete with the best of Italy's south. Smoky and balsamic on the nose with intense and expansive notes of raspberries, cloves, mint and high roast coffee, its packed, strappingly muscular, and dense flavors continue in a seamless flow over the palate...It will still be going strong in 2020...94" WA 8/04

Viticulture in Puglia is history and at the same time innovation. Cultivation of wines started thousands of years ago, at the time of "Magna Grecia", to which the Greek origins of many names of Apulian grape varieties attests. Tradition continues through the presence of native varieties such as Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo, both true expressions of a strong and extra-ordinary vital territory. The production of high quality wines is related to recent steps towards innovation and creativity: substantial changes have been obtained through the use of modern viticulture techniques and the introduction of non native grape varieties (i.e. Chardonnay and Cabernet) that express themselves in this "terroir" in a completely unique way. Tormaresca is the expression of the above two souls. Character, personality and top quality are the characteristics that Puglia transmits to the native grape varieties. For this reason the Antinori family gave birth to Tormaresca in 1998 when they started investing in Puglia, considering it one of the most promising regions in Italy for the production of high quality wines with a strong territorial identity. The 2001 Bocca di Lupo is a wine which demonstrates that the Aglianico grown in the northwestern part of Puglia, just a short distance from the Basilicata, can compete with the best of Italyrsquo;s south. Smoky and balsamic on the nose with intense and expansive notes of raspberries and blackberries, cloves, mint, and high-roast coffee, its packed, strappingly muscular, and dense flavors continue in a seamless flow over the palate, softening as they move but still totally mouth-filling and explosively powerful. The only regret is that these wines are released too early and will probably be drunk too early as well mdash; this is a bottle which I would not touch until 2007, and it will still be going strong in 2020.

Lots of juicy berry and plum, with hints of spice and mineral. Full-bodied, with spicy fresh fruit on the palate, firm tannins and a clean, minerally finish. Nicely done. Give it a while. Best wine ever from here. Aglianico and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2005.
