Torlesse Wines Limited is based at Waipara Village, adjacent to State Highway 1, 60 kilometres north of Christchurch. The company takes its name from an early Canterbury resident, surveyor and farmer, Englishman Charles Torlesse. He gave his name to the Torlesse mountain range which part circles the Canterbury Plains and was at one time the largest land owner and farmer in North Canterbury and founder of the nearby town of Rangiora. Interestingly, the name Torlesse is given to the underlying bedrock from which most New Zealand soils are derived – Torlesse, the terroir of New Zealand! Torlesse is owned by the Rayner, Tomlin, Blowers, Pharis and Fabris families. The Managing Director and wine maker is Kym Rayner (B.Sc.). Kym is a graduate of Roseworthy Wine College, South Australia, where he spent his early years. Kym initially held wine making positions with several hometown McLaren Vale wineries before immigrating to New Zealand – initially with Penfolds in Gisborne and then Montana in Blenheim. In 1991 he joined Torlesse with its establishment at Waipara. The company carries out all aspects of wine making from crushing, fermentation and barrel maturation, through to bottling on site. The wines are then distributed nation wide and exported from its Christchurch warehouse. Wine tasting facilities are available at our cellar-door outlet at Waipara, together with a growing range of wine accessories and interesting arts and crafts from afar. The Waipara area is one of New Zealand’s newest and rapidly expanding wine areas. Nestled in the lee of the Teviotdale hills and open to the warming northwest winds, the long narrow Waipara Valley provides an ideal climate for growing premium quality grapes. Its north facing, moderately sloping terrain provides an ideal sun-trap for fruiting vines. The company makes stylish and distinctive wines from specific vineyards in Waipara, including 35 Hectares of shareholder owned Waipara vineyards. The annual crush varies depending on availability but is normally 200 tonnes per annum . The company “handcrafts” batches of wine from each grower and is thus able to acknowledge the grower with credit on its labels. Torlesse is proud to be part of the rapidly growing Waipara wine region – perhaps the best grape growing region in New Zealand and invites you to try our wide range of high quality award-winning wines. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
