Torii Mor Pinot Noir Yamhill County Olson Estate Vineyard 2008
The grapes were picked on October 13th and were fermented by indigenous yeast in small fermentors. They were punched down three times daily, pressed very gently, and racked to a variety of French oak barrels: 27.59% new, 44.83% 1 year old, and the rest neutral. The barrels were racked in April and again in August when the blend was put together before returning to barrels for another 11 months.

Tight on the nose with a slightly medicinal, chinato edge which is accented by notes of dried flowers, sweet herbs, and a touch of tomato based bbq sauce. Lean and focused on entry with slightly dusty if nicely ripe tannins highlighting the flavors of slightly astringent red fruit. This comes off as a bit simple at the moment, tight and clenched on the palate with nice cherry and bay leaf tones over a core of dusty earth. It needs time but may always be a bit stern for some peoples palates. 90pts

The 2008 Hawks View Vineyard Pinot Noir has a rich aroma mix of flowers and dried herbs, framed by sweet oak. As the wine is exposed to more air, a mix of red and dark cherries, sweetness of jammy fruit and earth notes unfold. The flavors are of red cherries, sweet jammy dark cherries/boysenberries, earthiness married with herb spices and nice oak-toast notes. The wine has great acid presence, showcasing the elegant, forward fruit. The mouth-feel is rich, soft, sweet and elegant. The aftertaste is rich, sweet and complex with layers of dark fruits, earth notes, cedar-oak notes, sweet tannins and spiciness. The wine has a medium weight texture, with a soft but rich tannin structure that fills the mouth and amplifies the aftertaste. This wine will benefit from extended cellaring and can be decanted and enjoyed today!
