Earth and forest floor on the nose with a nuance of oak and some small, red berry fruit. Rather light on entry, this is smooth with a nice underlay of dusty if fine grained tannins. The fruit is a bit shy, earthy and raspberry toned with a nice rusty edge. The finish is quite mineral-driven with minty inner mouth perfumes and decent length. This is subtle and rather elegant with good freshness and perfumes in the mouth, though it is a bit shy in the fruit department today. 88pts

Slightly smoky on the nose with notes of campfire, wood spice, and vanillin drifting over dried cherry fruit. This has a distinctly toasty quality to the nose. On the palate all of that is subsumed by rich fruit, raspberries and more savory berry tones. this is nicely open and expressive with the mid-palate well supported by soft, integrated tannins. This really is all about the fruit but remains so well balanced, adding a bit of weight and power on the backend but retaining real finesse on the finish. Lovely wine that should develop a bit more complexity with some age. 91pts

Aromas of herbs, spices and florals mixed with black and red cherry, dark chocolate and a dusty note of earth. Flavors of red and dark berries, dark cherry, blackberry and spicy earthiness. Not overly complex, fell a tad flat in that regard. - Tasted at winery 8/17/10

Winemaker's Notes:

Harvested on October 15th and 18th, fermented with indigenous yeast and about 15% whole clusters, this Pinot noir aged for 15 months in 19.05% new French oak, 28.57% one and two year old, and 23.81% neutral. The barrels were racked in April, then again in August when the blend was put together before returning to barrels for another 5 months before bottling.

The 2008 “Dundee Hills Select” aroma is shy at first; then with a little aeration it opens up to herb spices (thyme?) and floral notes mixed with black and red cherries, dark chocolate, and a light – Dundee dust- earthy note. The flavors are sweet and display a mixture of red and dark berries: red cherries, dark cherries, black berries, a mix of earthy character and spiciness. The texture is rich and round, and the tannins fill the mouth with sweetness. The finish is very long, big, fruity, and rich and seems to keep on getting richer and spicier.
