What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

This single vineyard wine, located next to the winery block on Roennfeldt Road, was planted by Dave Powell in 1994 with cuttings off old RunRig vineyards - some of the oldest genetic material in Australia. The Barossa's first co-fermented Shiraz/Viognier, Descendant has been joined by many more in the last couple of years - a testament to its success. Shiraz is crushed straight on top of Viognier, which has been lightly pressed for RunRig. The blend of fruit is then co-fermented and later the wine is matured for 18 months in barrels that had been previously used for RunRig. The deep red clay read more...

document.getElementById("NoProductImage").innerHTML = ""; Jeremy Oliver 95 points!"Complex- brooding and meaty- lifted by heady- fragrant and spicy Viognier- this is a first class wine whose sumptuous fruit- high quality oak and firm powdery tannins are finely balanced and tightly integrated. It's deep and youthful perfume of berry and plum like fruit reveals reductive- charcuterie-like undertones and Apricot-like suggestions of viognier. Long- alluring and silky- with glimmers of mint and menthol beneath its juicy vibrant fruit."Jeremy read more...

IWC 93 (7/2006): Deep ruby. Primary aromas of berry skin, violet, freshly roasted coffee, high-fat chocolate and cinnamon. Very fresh in the mouth, with dense but tangy flavors of cassis, blueberry, mocha and fruitcake. Impressively concentrated and focused wine. With air, this deepened in flavor but gave up nothing in finesse. Finishes sweet and quite long, with an exotic chocolate note and bright acids.

WS 93 (10/2006): Lithe, open-textured Shiraz-Viognier blend, offering pretty boysenberry flavors. Feels lighter than most Barossa Shiraz and shows the floral and peach accents of the Viognier. Not quite as seamless as previous vintages, but it has a personality of its own. Drink now through 2012.
