What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Stellar stuff. Great ruby color and a super kick of fruit and earth together. One doesn't overpower the other so the ruby fruits are all there, but there's no fruit bomby sugar rush that goes overboard.

Straight from the bottle: Color is a deep garnet, lightening at the edges. Nose has some alcohol heat, lots of berry (blackberry?) aroma, with some earthiness or herbal essence in there. First sip is big on the berry and earth, with smooth tannins and a finish that started a little bitter, but quickly turned to a nice fruity ending with a bit of heat. I think 'Chateauneauf du Pape' when I taste this, but this is more fruity than most CdP's I have tried. Very smooth straight from the bottle. I'm anxious to see what an hour in the decanter will do to this wine. Decanted for 1 hour: Even read more...
