Big and powerful red. Lots of raisin, with hints of smoke and charcoal. Full-bodied, with fruit and black pepper character. Long and juicy. Best after 2003.
Intense eucalyptus at first, but it rolls away to reveal pleasant dried fruit, cardamom and light oaky character. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a slightly tangy finish. A clean, traditional Amarone. Best after 2005.
A lovely Amarone with loads of finesse. Wonderful aromas of blackberries, violets and cherries, with mineral and spices. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Still tight. Drink now through 2014.
A bit understated on the nose, yielding just plum and leather at first, but this really blossoms on the palate, revealing layers of black cherry and plum fruit, framed by hints of vanilla and toast. Ripe and round without being heavy, this excellent Amarone finishes with dusty tannins and another gush of fresh fruit, suggesting 10 years of aging is not out of the question.
Surprisingly fresh, sweet red cherry fruit is layered over darker, foresty blackberry flavors, keeping this chewy, spicy Amarone youthful. For all its powerful, plush flavors, though, it's remarkably restrained, a wine that you could pour this spring with morel risotto.
A superb Amarone, the dark plum/purple-colored 1997 Amarone della Valpolicella reveals notes of cocoa, chocolate, raisins, and ripe plum as well as black cherry fruit. Full-bodied, soft, and luscious, it will drink well for 10ndash;12 years.
Yoursquo;ll feel the heat in this sun-drenched Amarone that offers a chewy consistency and a pleasingly firm but smooth texture. Aroma-wise, therersquo;s a lot going on: First are notes of mature cherry fruit, but there are also green, almost eucalyptus-like renderings. On top of those are coffee, bacon and cocoa.
