Tolosa Winery Syrah Vin de Table Français 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

2005 Estate Grown TOLOSA SyrahVarietal Composition:100% Edna Ranch SyrahAppellation:Edna ValleyProduction1,371 casesTasting Notes This transparent ruby red wine has an almost overwhelming aromatic nature. Syrahs characteristic perfume of black pepper is present in abundance, as well as blueberry, cedar, tobacco, and East Indian spices. The palate is primarily ripe fruit with hints of black walnut and toast. It is fresh and poised delicately between the concentrated young fruit and the spicy tannins. It is sassy and full of itself in the most charming way.Vineyard InformationOur 2005 Syrah comes from several vineyard sites on our Estate, from rich, low-lying valley soils, to high slopes of broken marine and volcanic rocks. We have Syrah planted in our coolest and in our warmest sites, which creates unique characteristics from year to year. Syrah requires much patience in the Edna Valley; it is the last variety to ripen on our Estate, and it is the wine which reveals itself most slowly in the winery, spending nearly eighteen months in barrel prior to final assembly and bottling. Winemaking & Cellar InformationA range of clones were used in making the 2005 Syrah , including 72% of Estrella, 14% of clone 877, 8% of clone 99, and the remainder being clone 177. Free run & light press regimes were used for making the 2005 Syrah juice. The juice was transferred into both four ton and eight ton open-top fermenters with four daily punch downs. The wine spent an average of twenty-one days in tank before being drained down into barrels, with 15% new French Oak. The wine aged was given the appropriate aging time before being bottled in Spring of 2007. Analytical InformationAlcohol: 14.7%T.A.: 5.93 g/LpH: 3.6Brix at Harvest: 24.7-26.1

Wine Enthusiast ReviewTastes rich and young right now, with jammy blackberry, cherry, licorice and pepper flavors that have been well-oaked, and that crisp Edna Valley acidity that makes the fruit shine. There's enough complexity in the texture and finish to make it feel important. Should hold for a couple of years, but it's not an ager.Wine Tasting NotesThis deeply colored gem opens with smoky notes underlain with a complex and seamless perfume, which has notes of blackberry bramble, cocoa, and lavender. On the palate the integrity introduced by the aroma expresses itself in medium structure with dynamic tannins, sweet fruit and vanilla notes. Very high levels of vinosity are the sure hallmark of a reserve wine, this is only achieved by the most stringent lot and barrel selection, which makes our 1772 series.

Wine Tasting NotesAromatically complex and layered with concentrated cherry and orange peel essence, with notes of sandalwood and white clover. The flavors and textures are classic, with a well structured entrance, expressive fruit mid-palate and a prolonged finish.
