Tolosa Winery Syrah Vin de Table Français 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

2001 Estate Grown TOLOSA Syrah Varietal Composition: 100% Edna Ranch Syrah Appellation: Edna Valley Production 1,160 cases Vineyard Information This estate syrah was crafted from the Estrella clone grown on two seperate sites. Both sites, picked just 2 days apart, contributed favorable characters unique to each site. Winemaking & Cellar Information The grapes were hand-harvested into half-ton bins. While 90% of the clusters were destemmed, 10% whole clusters were placed on the bottom of one-ton fermenters. Following a 36 hour cold soak the fermenters were inoculated with a natural wine yeast and punched down 3 times per day for the duration of fermentation. When dry, the must was bucketed to our small lot basket press, to ensure gently handling during this stage. Following a 24 hour settling period, the young wine was transferred to 90% American oak and 10% French oak, where it remained until the December 2003 bottling. Analytical Information Alcohol: 13.4% T.A.: 6.98 g/L pH: 3.58 Brix at Harvest: 24.7 Tasting Notes Morning herb garden aromatics atop pungent blackberry and smoky bay leaf. Flavors are of juicy black fruits, peppered game, and dried cherry. Slightly youthful tannin provides pleasant grip preceding a lusciously long finish. Library Notes Nice density of color, saturated and inky purple. Aroma of spice, white pepper, violet, good textureally.
