Tokara Sauvignon Blanc Walker Bay 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Tokara is the sum of various older estates, each with its own fascinating history, some of which date back to 1685 and can be seen named as ‘zonder naam’ on original Dutch records, which means without a name. Tokara is situated on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass at the highest point of the Simonsberg ward, about 5km from the historic winemaking town of Stellenbosch. Nothing is done at Tokara without an eye to the ultimate, highest possible quality of the wines, and to this end it was only in 2005 that the Tokara range was released onto the eagerly awaiting wine-drinking world. Although relatively youthful with only the second vintages released in 2006, Tokara has won many plaudits, medals, trophies and, importantly, recognition from the trade and consumers to put it firmly among the best that the Cape has to offer. Sourced exclusively from estate grown fruit, the main vineyard holding is dotted with olive groves around the Tokara winery on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain. The appearance of the Walker Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc has a brilliant hue of light straw with a speckled green tint. The nose displays perfume with concentrated elements of greengage, elderflower, jasmine and sugar snap peas. There are hints of asparagus and sea air. It is rich and full on the palate with intense flavours of gooseberries, green figs and greengage jelly. There is a crisp acidity, finishing with flinty, mineral and talcum notes, with a long creamy finish. Enjoy this with fresh wild East Coast oysters, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or grilled fish.

Tokara Winery:
When describing their wine, TOKARA's winemakers use words such as intensity, complexity and balance. They also emphasise the point that the wine shows a strong sense of place, reflecting the elegance and commitment to the excellence of its estate. TOKARA's wines are distinctive and sophisticated. They will age well and should gain in character when set down for a few years. Contributing to this quality is the estate's dedication to cutting edge technologies.
