Tokara Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

*Excellent 92 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate* Tokara is the sum of various older estates, each with its own fascinating history, some of which date back to 1685 and can be seen named as ‘zonder naam’ on original Dutch records, which means without a name. Situated on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass at the highest point of the Simonsberg ward, about 5km from the historic winemaking town of Stellenbosch. Nothing is done at Tokara without an eye to the ultimate, highest possible quality of the wines, and to this end it was only in 2005 that the Tokara range was released onto the eagerly awaiting wine-drinking world. The appearance of the Walker Bay Reserve is a brilliant light golden straw hue. Flinty, smoky and mineral aromas emerge on the nose, with underlying fresh lime zest and a hint of almonds and marzipan. The flavours are compact and balanced, entering with smoky and flinty notes, which broaden into lime zest and lemongrass, developing into flavours of creamy brioche and marzipan, with a long zesty finish. An excellent pairing with quail served with a saffron, Cape gooseberry and citrus sauce or hickory smoked duck breast with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. "The 2012 Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Chardonnay sees 11 months in tight-grain French oak of which 37% were new. It has a much more floral bouquet with mirabelle, dried apricot and a touch of butterscotch coming through with aeration. The palate is very well balanced and seems to have more substance and length than the 2013, with a crisp and vivacious orange zest and spice-driven finish. Excellent."- 92 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Tokara Winery:
When describing their wine, TOKARA's winemakers use words such as intensity, complexity and balance. They also emphasise the point that the wine shows a strong sense of place, reflecting the elegance and commitment to the excellence of its estate. TOKARA's wines are distinctive and sophisticated. They will age well and should gain in character when set down for a few years. Contributing to this quality is the estate's dedication to cutting edge technologies.
