Tobia Alma Mater Rioja Tempranillo 2011

Member Review by tommyvino:

The color is a medium purple red ruby hue. Powerful aromas with a little age, my nose picked up barnyard, chocolate, tobacco, brown sugar, black cherry and eucalyptus. Dry, medium bodied, tart acidity, medium astringent tannins and a long finish. Flavorful on the palate, strawberry jam, raisin, black plum, and dried herbs. This is a funky earthy modern style Rioja with a slight touch of "brett".

Berry, mild prune, licorice, herb and rubbery aromas set up a wiry mouthfeel that’s full of energy. Lemony oak rests on top of earthy berry fruit flavors and hard tannins, while oak and high acidity as well as plum and raspberry notes finish it off.

The 2009 Seleccion Crianza is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 10% Garnacha which comes through as very balsamic, with mint and hints of eucalyptus, very fresh with ripe dark cherries, licorice and spices and a fluid palate, medium-bodied, with good acidity and clean flavors that linger in the mouth. A no-nonsense modern Crianza at a great price. Drink 2014–2017.

The 2003 Crianza a dark ruby-colored effort, offers expressive aromas of herbs, vanilla, cherries, and red currants. Medium-bodied, it has very good depth and concentration and enough structure for 2-3 years of further evolution.

A traditionally styled Rioja, yet surprisingly modern from start to finish. The use of older barrels mixed with new American oak barriques help create a pleasant, supple wine that pairs with everything from cheese and fruit to baked lamb or chuletas. Leather, strawberries and cedar dominate the nose. In the mouth, the leather gives way to wet earth and a forest floor in autumn. The finish is long and returns to the traditional flavors of cedar, vanilla and smoke.

Loamy, cedar, and dark cherry aromas swirl from the glass of this medium-bodied red. It has an Old World, complex character to be appreciated with slow sips over a long dinner. Not a fruit-driven wine andmdash; more sophisticated, with spice, earth and balance.
