Toasted Head Syrah 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Shiraz is produced entirely from grapes grown in our estate vineyard in the Dunnigan Hills of Yolo County. The region’s low, rolling hillsides provide an ideal environment for the Shiraz grape, which flourishes in thin soils with deficit irrigation programs like the one we employ at Toasted Head. To further restrict crop yields and maximize intensity in the grapes, we use the Smart-Dyson trellising system, which stresses our vines throughout the growing season, intensifying grape color and flavor. Winemaking The juice is cold-soaked at 55º F for 24 hours before being inoculated with Syrah yeast L2056 and yeast D254 to instigate fermentation, which proceeds in stainless steel tanks at 75-85º F for 7-10 days to fully extract color, flavor and tannins. During fermentation, the juice is pumped over the skins twice daily. After being pressed off the skins, the new wine is aged 12 months in American oak barrels, 50% new. Winemaker's Note Our Shiraz boasts a deep, nearly opaque color and fragrant aromas of ripe, toasted raspberries and blueberries, with cocoa and cedar scents and a subtle floral note from the Viognier in the blend, which adds complexity. On the full-bodied palate, savory black cherry fruit flavors are complemented by sweet oak tones, which marry seamlessly with the wine’s full, ripe tannins to create a rich, mouthfilling impression.

unpretentious and at a decent price. has enough "bite" but is overall a smooth blend. I like it and that's all that counts.

Wine Tasting NotesDeeply colored, with aromas of violets and blueberries, cola and cloves. On the palate are berry flavors complemented by cocoa, cedar and spice notes. The wine is broad and rich in the mouth with full, ripe tannins.
