Toasted Head Merlot Barrel Aged North Coast 2008

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Unlike the many lackluster Merlots one may find on store shelves, Toasted Head Merlotrsquo;s complex aromas of toast and molasses, anise, red berries, and leather prepare the drinker wonderfully well for the bright raspberry and lush black cherry flavors which follow. A spicy midpalate and a toasty vanilla finish complete the tasting experience. The full yet balanced tannins make it drinkable while young or worthy of aging.

From this appellation in the Delta region east of San Francisco, a warm-country Bordeaux blend of four varietals dominated by Merlot. Itrsquo;s soft and flavorful, with melted tannins, and glides smoothly across the palate.

Aromas and flavors of cassis and red berry fruit with toffee, chocolate and vanilla oak nuances. Try this full-bodied Merlot with skirt steak with caramelized onions or a rustic beef bourguignon.

Complex aromas and flavors of bright cherry, roasted coffee and vanilla, with hints of dried herbs and spice. Tannins are firm, but balanced, given the very ripe style of the wine and its oodles of toasty oak.

Shows real finesse and polish in the smooth, dusty texture and overall balance. The flavors are earthy-fruity, suggesting coffee, blackberries and plums, with lots of palate-stimulating spices. Easy to find with 48,000 cases produced.

Toasted Head Merlot is a blend of 91% Merlot, 6% Petite Verdot and 3% Malbec. Classic Merlot flavors of cherry, raspberry and chocolate are highlighted by wild berry and blackberry flavors from Petite Verdot. Malbec softens the tannins and adds a hints of spiciness to the finish. Barrels with toasted heads used for aging add richness and a nice touch of toasty, vanillin spice to the wine.
