What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The grapes for our Barrel Reserve Chardonnay come from five outstanding vineyards in the Russian River Valley. This celebrated cool-climate region, with its morning fog and chilly evenings, enjoys a lengthy growing season, affording our Chardonnay grapes extended hang time on the vine. Warm, sunny afternoons and well-drained Goldridge sandy loam soils ripen the grapes to perfection, enabling our white winemaker, Blake Kuhn, to craft a distinctive, complex Chardonnay with rich fruit, oak, and malolactic flavors balanced by fresh acidity and the Russian River Valley’s telltale minerality.
Winemaking

The read more...grapes are handpicked in early morning and gently destemmed and pressed to optimize freshness and purity. The juice is fermented entirely in French oak barrels from eight different coopers (including François Frères, Louis Latour, and Mercier), with 100% of the lots going through malolactic fermentation to promote a rich, creamy texture. The wine is aged sur lie (on the yeast lees) in barrel for 10 months, with weekly stirring for the first 10 weeks to protect the young wine’s flavors from oxidation and to enhance its structure. It is racked off the lees and settled in tank for six weeks before bottling.
Winemaker's Note

The nose offers toasty, creamy aromas with fresh pear, peach, and Honeycrisp apple scents with hints of butterscotch, vanilla bean, and cinnamon/nutmeg. On the palate, the wine boasts a full, creamy texture and rich pear tart flavors, spicy, clove-y oak tones, and a pronounced streak of minerality, enlivening the clean, crisp finish.    (hide)
