Tignanello 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

2005 Antinori Tignanello Toscana Very intense ruby red colour. Nicely expressed varietal aromas with hints of black berry fruit. The palate is weighty, dense and vibrant with complex structure thanks to support of the acidity. Long and lingering with hints of chocolate, coffee and marmalade in the aftertaste. The beautifully handled tannin from the wine and wood blend making Tignanello a very complex, stylish and sophisticated wine. Winery notes2004 Vintage 96 pts (RP) and 96 pts (WS) and in the top 10 wines in the world for wine spectator.

Tignanello is the “Super Tuscan” label produced by celebrated Italian wine producer Antinori. The Antinori family has produced wine in Tuscany for well over 600 years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. The winery has managed to stay in the family over the centuries, now under the direction of Marchese Piero Antinori, with help from his daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia.    Tignanello has been produced since the early 1970s in the vineyard of the same name, and is credited with being among the very first Super Tuscans. It is a blend of primarily Sangiovese with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This makes it closer to a traditional Tuscan wine, the inverse of most Super Tuscans which balance more heavily on the Bordeaux grapes. It was one of the first wines in the region to be aged in small oak barrels to impart richer flavors.  Read less

Full- to medium-bodied, with fine, fruit-coated tannins and a medium finish.

Big nose of dark chocolate. Wonderfully dry, lush and deeply concentrated wine. Very nice.

92 points. I immediately pick up on really rich floral tones on the nose. There is also a cherry component, but also something that reminds me of fresh sliced tomatoes. There is a definite terroir to this wine and I feel like I’m in Tuscany as I’m sniffing it. There are brown sugar and cranberry notes with coffee beans and stone mingling flawlessly together to create a really unique, complex nose. The palate opens on ripe dark fruit, dark stone, and a mix of pepper and clove. The fruit is supple and intense at the same time, and I pick up on subtle herbal notes, caramel, and white chocolate tones throughout the mid palate. The finish is long and elegant with very soft pomegranate and brown butter tones running strongly through it. This is an awesome wine, very nice balance of ripeness and supple tannin. It’s very smooth, rich, and comes across as being very well made. Even though at just shy of $100, this wine is nowhere near low priced, I would say that it is an excellent special occasion wine Worth Trying. Lovely tannin and complexity on the nose and taste. My very first super tuscan and just bought another bottle to age for a few more years.

Striking ruby red in the glass, lovely colour. The nose quickly brings serious aromas, generous amounts of berry, spices, chocolate and some tobacco. A real monster on the palate with a great balance of acidity, flavours of coffee, jam and chocolate on the mid palate with a nice smooth and pleasing finish. Very well structured and balanced, drinking nicely today but expect maturity within a few years. 93 Points

This big and rich Chianti was rated 91 by Wine Spectator and rightly so. This wine features spicy and sweet layers and intense dark berry flavors. The color of this wine is the darkest ruby. Served half the bottle decanted and the other half not. The wine out of the bottle was sharp but not unpleasant and made me glad that I decanted some of it. The decanted wine show more velvety tannins and was smooth and delectable. Successfully paired the 2005 Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva with bacon-wrapped filet mignon and it was a good match. Not the first thing I'd think of pairing with it, but worked well none-the-less.

The 2005 Tignanello is not terribly dissimilar to the 2004 in style, although it is unquestionably a smaller-scaled wine. There is notable clarity and precision in the wine s red fruit, smoke, minerals, tobacco and spices. The signature Tignanello elegance is there, the only question is whether there is enough sheer density to stand up to the wine s structural components. Today my impression is that there is not, but I still have high expectations for this vintage considering how wines from far lesser years have developed. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

JS: Pretty and fresh aromas of flowers, berry and licorice. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a solid core of fruit. Very pretty and balanced. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2011. 26,250 cases made.
