What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

Winemakers Notes

Vintage
A cool spring and exceptionally warm summer led to
near perfect growing conditions in 2000. Moderate fall
temperatures and cool nights allowed for ample “hang time”
and the development of mature, ripe flavors.
Vineyards
The grapes for the 2000 vintage of our Red Meritage
blend came from five different vineyards throughout
the Columbia Valley. The components for the Cabernet
Sauvignon portion (48%) of the blend are Martinez
Vineyard and Kiona Vineyard. The Cabernet Franc portion
(4%) of the blend was sourced from read more...Pleasant Vineyard
in the Yakima Valley and the Merlot portion (48%) of the
blend was sourced from Wahluke Vineyard and Conner-Lee
Vineyard both in the Wahluke Slope area. Harvest dates
varied from September 21st through October 20th of 2000.
All the fruit is hand harvested into small bins and crushed
upon delivery to the winery.
Fermentation & Aging
The fruit was de-stemmed and crushed into small fermentors
where the fruit was either punched down by hand three
times a day or pumped over twice daily. Primary fermentation
lasted an average of seven days, after which the skins were
gently pressed off and fermentation was completed in barrel.
Malolactic fermentation occurred in small French oak barrels
adding a nice depth and complexity to the wine. While aging
in oak barrels, the wines were racked every four months to
naturally clarify the wine. Prior to bottling, the wine was
egg white fined.
