What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Reviews

Great nose of blackberry and plum with a touch of heat. Flavors of plum, black cherries, and scorched earth. Nice integration of tannins, fruit and acidity. Everything works in this wine. Outstanding - 91 points. Note: #57 in Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines of 2007.

While not as good as some of the previous vintages of Shotfire Shiraz, the 2006 is a great wine with food (particularly Italian/pizza). While it should be a "drink now" wine, it might be better with another year on it.

This wine does need aeration, but it opens up to unbelievably dense, smoky, leathery nose. Being sold in Chicago for $15.00, once of the best values going. Had this wine with lamb and tenderloin on two occasions, especially good with lamb. Deserves the accolades it has received.

Shotfire seems to have a fairly high variance from year to year, but I particularly like this vintage. It has mild tannins, and lingers well on the palette. It was better decanted for about 20 minutes.

Decanted 1 hour. Incredibly dark, almost black, in the decanter and glass, staining both. Big, sweet blackberry fruit flavors, but surprisingly mild tannins in this wine make it very easy to quaff. No heat as previously detected in March of last year. Just a very smooth, tasty, fruitbomb of a wine. I like it!
