What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Editorial Reviews

- Meaty and eucalyptus scented with integrated oak, milk chocolate, and espresso notes balanced against restrained dried currant fruit
- -big and soft, pillowy even with nice acidity and resolved tannins, candied strawberry and cherry fruit, elegant, some very well integrated oak notes with background hints of earth, a touch of iron and emerging cherry fruit, a touch hot with a nice cherry toned finish. Little menthol and vanilla gives the fruit a touch of a cough lozenge edge, more menthol on the finish, which has a long, juicy black raspberry finale. . 91 pts

Reviews

Bright spicy currants on the nose with a tight ripe fruity peppery taste thingy. Finish is a little sour but overall very complex and enjoyable.

Some like it hot and spicy, and I find myself in that crowd sometimes. The oak and tannins are very subtle in this wine, but the citrus and alcohol speaks loud and clear. Rich in dark berry flavors, mild vanilla, and paprika. A bit too sweet.
