What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

The 2007 La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir greets you with complex aromatics of wild strawberries, cranberries, blackboard chalk, baking spices and a touch of earth. Its soft, smooth entry on the palate is followed by deep cherry and raspberry flavors coupled with cola and a bit of licorice. The wine strikes a wonderful balance of being mouth-filling, due to the abundance of fruit flavors & finely integrated tannins, as well as mouthwatering, a result of its good acidity. Overall, the wine's many flavors linger on the palate and produce a really long finish.

Reviews

A memorable Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills, with luscious color and a nose of blackberry, plum and hints of oak. The depth of flavors and exceptionally smooth finish puts this very enjoyable wine at the top of my list.
