Thelema Chardonnay Elgin Sutherland 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fairly oaky but with a nice perfumed quality exhibiting a bit of toasted corn, cashew brittle and floral notes over the oak and tart apricot fruit tones. A fairly rich mouthfeel with plenty of sweet fruit, a touch of RS to help add roundness and soften the bit of tannin on the palate. Nice fruity finish with peaches, vanilla, and a touch of toasty oak. A pretty dense little wine. Could use some time to round out. 88pts

Sutherland Estate is a family-owned, boutique enterprise. We have endeavoured to make the smallest footprint on our land. Our property consists of 110 acres, most of which is undisturbed native bushland. The large hill on the northern side of the property, upon which our cellar door is built, is known as Daniels Hill. We have four small, separate vineyard blocks totalling about ten acres. Our original block (D block) was planted over a decade ago to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. There has been further plantings of these four varieties since then, together with two parcels of Tempranillo and Gewurztraminer. The Yarra Valley traditionally enjoys the bulk of its annual rainfall in winter and spring. Accordingly all blocks have dripper lines, and irrigation is (sparingly) provided, as needed, during summer. We do not have mains or town water - our water needs are meet from a number of dams around the property. Vineyard management includes hand pruning, bunch thinning and/or leaf plucking (if needed) and early morning hand picking. Read less

Really strong oaky, animaly nose, but lighter and fruity in the mouth once you get passed it.

Grassy, crisp nose with plenty of stone fruits. Definitely a crisp and acidic style of Chardonnay, with a lot of refreshing fruit and a nicely oaked finish with a hint of cedar, corn, and toast.

Lean, sharp green apples on the nose. Medium body with some pleasant mealiness on the backend. Apricot finish.

Red apples on the nose, with a nice caramel scent. There are also notes of cashew and oak upfront. The wine has good bite upfront, before moving to a mellow, wide mid palate of butter, caramel, candied apple and cinammon. Finishes on a lot of oak, but is well done.
