The Hess Collection the Lion Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder 2014

Member Review by stellarspellar:

The nose is disappointing in its lack of complexity. It has the usual dark fruit on the nose with little else. However, on the palate this wine is very enjoyable. It has a smooth, medium-thick mouthfeel and a solid, well-balanced tannic structure. These qualities make it very drinkable. I enjoyed it with a nice hard cheese. This wine was $17 at my local grocery store. If it were $11 I would buy it all the time.

Being their flagship wine, I expected a little more complexity and depth but the Hess Select Cabernet was smooth and truthful to Napa Valley reds.

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Mount Veeder is the coolest, southern most mountain district in Napa and has both a volcanic and geologically unique soil that only occurs in this mountain, this is 100% Estate Grown at Mount Veeder. These wines display balance and soft tones with a silky finish and well structured for age. The unique attributes of the soils, exposures and altitude create wines that reveal the mountain’s distinct personality.

Notes: The lion has been the emblem of the Hess Family for nine generations. It has come to symbolize the bold and persevering nature of founder Donald Hess and our winery home on Mount Veeder. “Live Each Day with the Heart and Courage of The Lion” has been the Hess Family credo for nine generations and The Lion Cabernet Sauvignon represents the very best Cabernet Sauvignon we produce from our estate vineyards on Mount Veeder in the very best vintages. The 2014 vintage marks the second vintage that is a winemaking collaboration between consulting winemaker Celia Welch and Hess Winemaker Dave Guffy. Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Appellation: Mount Veeder Aging: Aged in 65% New French oak barrels for 22 months Acid: 0.62 gms/100ml pH: 3.61 Alcohol: 14.8%

Ripe and forward in the modern cult style, with flavors of blackberry tart, black currants, milk chocolate and ripe mulberry, in addition to sweet, smoky oak. Sturdy mountain tannins provide structural bite, and should help the wine mature ... Wine Enthusiast. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2006 Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
