Great example of a Napa mountain cab. Earlier vintages (99, 01) were even better. This wine was my first introduction so it and this winery will always be a personal favorite (helps too that I have family ties to the winery)

    Winemaker's Notes:

Hess's highest estate vineyard was once the site of an old cherry orchard near the summit of Mount Veeder. Donald Hess originally planted the site to Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, due to the unique microclimatic conditions, the vineyard now is considered to be well suited to early-ripening varietals such as Malbec and Merlot. The aroma expresses cassis, molasses, milk chocolate, black berry, and black cherry followed by briary notes of sweet loganberry and oak-cedar. On the palate the wine is layered with the same fruit characters and dark chocolate with chewy tannins and a medium bodied mid palate that build through the finish. Great age worthy potential. This is a powerful, brambly and structured mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that pairs well with robust dishes and grilled meats.
