The Crusher Wilson Vineyard Merlot 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Toasty, earthy, big black cherry, big fruit, a fair amount of wood, lot’s of sweet scents. Though the charry oak is pretty much slathered on. Medium bodied with sweetness on entry to the red fruits that are followed across the palate by toast, spicy wood tones that add a touch of coffee bean bitterness to the fruit. A good bit of acid refreshes the back end but there is something a bit coarse and tough about this wine even though it delivers a fair amount of candied red and black fruits. 84pts

To Don Sebastiani and Sons, family is clearly an important aspect of winemaking. While Don Sebastiani and Sons wasn’t founded until 2001, Samuele Sebastiani created a winery in 1904, and started growing the company, as well as the town of Sonoma. Over the years, the winery changed hands many times, but it always stayed within the family. By 2000, the winery was producing eight million cases of wine a year. However, at that time, Don Sebastiani sold many of the assets and kept only the family brand and the Sonoma winery and vineyards. Though he stepped down as CEO and Chairman in 2000, that wasn’t the end for him. In 2001, he and his sons, Donny and August, founded Don Sebastiani and Sons, eventually growing production back up to two million cases annually. Today, Greg Kitchens and Michelle McClendon, winemakers for Don Sebastiani and Sons, strive to produce high-end wine at affordable prices. They don’t just source grapes from California - they’ve also formed partnerships to create Australian and Chilean blends, further expanding the company’s reach and complexity. Read less

Very rustic, funky smell. Past that it's got two layers, one is more fruity and cherry flavored, but there's a good bit of the chicken coop in there too. Funky wine.

some barnyard funk on the nose, dark earth with a subtle dark cherry notes, more cherry and dark fruit elements on the palate, simple finish

A dark red hue, classic Merlot aromas of smoky, sweet spice and soft red berries linger with a certain signature Wilson Vineyards character. This wine is smooth and welcoming from the get-go, beginning with lush red, jammy fruit. Caramel and cherry notes emerge on the mid-palate, evolving into cedar and cinnamon on the finish, with pleasant strawberry nuances in the background. Blended with a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon to add backbone and structure, the finish shows just a light touch of tannin and excellent length. - Winery
