The Chocolate Block 2007

Member Review by winescribbler:

Syrah 55%, Grenache Noir 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 16%, Cinsault 5%, Viognier 4%. Production just 586 barrels. 14.5% Alcohol. Served slightly chilled in the warmth of South Africa I also chilled it briefly back in a, significantly cooler, UK to the wines benefit. http://www.spittoon.biz/boekenhoutskloof_the_chocolate.html

The farm of Boekenhoutskloof wasoriginally granted to Huguenot settlers in1776. For two hundred years it remained in the same family. Over the two centuries they engaged in agricultural activities as diverse as tobacco, fruit, cattle and ultimately wine production. The original owners ceased wine production in the 1940s. The existing partnership re-opened the winery for production in 1996. Lead by Cellarmaster Marc Kent (South African Winemaker of the Year, 2007), the Winery is now regarded as one of SA’s top producers. Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium range selling out on release each vintage. The Chocolate Block, a Syrah based blend, is probably the most successful new offering to come out of SA in the modern era. Boekenhoutskloof is acknowledged by Robert Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide and The 2009 Wine Report as South Africa’s # 1 producer. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Very nice wine - full of great fruit, with a beautiful silky mouthfeel and a solid finish. Starts out with delicate lilac and cardamon spice on the nose. Fantastic rich smooth mid palate with wonderful mouthfeel. Very integrated and balanced.

Weingut:  BoekenhoutskloofAnbauregion:  FranschhoekRebsorten:  55% Syrah, 20% Grenache Noir, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cinsault, 4% ViognierInhalt:  0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 14,25 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 5 g/lRestsüße: 2,5 g/lEmpfohlene Serviertemperatur:  16-18°CFassreife: in Barriques gereift (8 Monate)Lagerfähigkeit: 5 - 7 Jahre ab Jahrgan Rotwein > Südafrika > Paarl - Franschhoek

An eternal crowd pleaser, the Chocolate Block starts with alluring aromas of violet, anise, black currant and mocha, leading into bold layers of smoke, cherry, chocolate, and spice. Elegant but with backbone, this wine will age nicely.

A ripe, polished, slightly sweet style, displaying jammy plum and raspberry fruit layered with mocha toast. Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier. Drink now.

Dark red. Blackberry, licorice, leather and wild herbs on the nose. A sweet, savory fruit bomb in the mouth, with sexy flavors of currant, plum, dried herbs and mint. Finishes a tad warm, but smooth and easy to drink.
