Textbook Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016

Member Review by Stallion:

Not a bad Cabernet,,,,I just expected more from everything I read. Lots of cherry and licorice on the nose. The wine lacks a solid backbone, and as a result ends up being a tad bit thin......It was just ok....I wanted more substance. Cheers!

This, like the '12 Freemark Abbey, has fleshed out nicely also. Plenty of dark berry fruit, spice, a light mint note, mocha notes with firm tannins and juicy acidity this is really, really good. 89 points - drink or hold - Paul

Jammy dark fruits, cocoa and spice mix in perfect harmony and linger on the supple finish. This is indeed a textbook Cabernet!

Jon and Susan have received many plaudits for their exciting Napa Valley reds including a single vineyard Oakville Cab from a vineyard right next to Screaming Eagle. Clearly they have a talent for sourcing great fruit and their winemaking is equally skilled. This is their straight Napa Cab that they source from vineyards in Oakville, St. Helena and Oak Knoll. This 2012 is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot aged for 15 months in 1/3 new French oak. Robert Parker scored it 90 points and said “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley spent 16 months in French oak. It exhibits the vintage’s attractive notes of spice box, generous fruit, outstanding ripeness, and fine purity. This is a delicious "textbook" Cabernet Sauvignon that should well young and age effortlessly for 15 or more years. It reminds me of the great 1974 Souverain Vintage Selection, an early best buy in The Wine Advocate that at forty years of age is still going strong!”

Lurid ruby. Displays aromas of blackcurrant, cherry liqueur, licorice and pipe tobacco, with a subtle vanilla quality rising up in the glass. Fleshy and broad in the mouth, offering sweet, black pepper-tinged dark berry flavors that pick up a medicinal bitterness on the back half. Finishes on a slightly clenched note, with good clarity and lingering spiciness. Seems awfully primary right now.

It is called “Mise En Place” to reflect the preparation and diligence exercised in the vineyards and winery. Cabernet Sauvignon for "Mise En Place" comes from two very special single vineyard sites located on the extreme eastern and western sides of the Oakville District abutting the rugged and dry Vaca Mountain Range. This sub-section of the Oakville AVA is renowned for superb, richly-textured Cabernet Sauvignon. The Textbook vineyard is actually neighbors to the Screaming Eagle Vineyard and down the road from Joseph Phelps' Backus Vineyard and Rudd Vineyard; about as prime a piece of vineyard land as you'll ever see. Yields are very low, less than 2.5 tons per acre. Hand harvested and hand sorted the grapes slowly ferment for 19 days before going into barrels. 100% French Oak for 22 months before hand racking and egg-white fining. Steve Tanzer scored it 92 points saying "Opaque ruby. Sexy aromas of candied dark berries, pipe tobacco, licorice and vanilla, with a smoky topnote. Broad, pliant, seamless blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors are brightened by a spicy element. Emphatically fruity but structured cabernet, with strong finishing power and subtle, well-knit tannins that add shape. The fruit for this wine is sourced from a site in the high-rent eastern side of Oakville."
