What to Expect

Carmenère is one of a small group of wines that thrives in its adopted land but struggles to gain acceptance at home. It still is used on occasion in France's Bordeaux region where it adds color and complexity to blends with its distinctive mélange of smoky, herbal and gamy tones. In South America, particularly Chile, it ripens fully and the wines take on added layers of dark berry fruit that gives it a balance rarely achieved in France.

Reviews

The Carmenère grape came to Chile via Bordeaux in the late nineteenth century, and lately, it's been more at home in South America than in France. The red wines made from this grape can range from refreshing and easy to drink to full-bodied and dense. This is one of the brawnier ones, with rich, dark fruit and a touch of spiciness from oak aging.

Earthy and peppery but heavy on the vegetal pyrazines and creosote for my tastes
